This sounds like something I might enjoy in my SG.
I have one that I had made by MJ in the custom shop. Mincer was right about the series mode on the original the p90 mode is pretty dark too. I had one made with this in mind and I requested it not be so muddy and cut through the mix easier. Mine came out great, like a bright p90 but still retaining a little p90 character in the mids(no spongy bass usually associated with p90's) mine came out with a DCR of 24.0k and sounds great. Not muddy in the least.
That sounds intriguing; do you know which magnets MJ used? I have no complaints about the P90 coil in my P-Rails, but I wouldn't mind a bit more from the rail coil and a bit less mud in series.

"Spongy bass usually associated with P-90's?!?
Every P-90 I have (probably at least 2 dozen) have very tight bass. What P-90 specifically are you referring to? (You made a very generalized statement that certainly can't be true).
Your right that was a generalized statement I should have said "in my experience", the p90's I've heard from DiMarzio and Gibson don't have the tightest bass maybe spongy wasn't the best word.
Yeah, that makes more sense. I haven't tried any DiMarzio P-90s but I find that Gibson's just don't have much bass...still, what bass they DO have doesn't sound spongy to me. Do you know what magnets are in the DiMarzio P-90s that you have tried?
Im not sure, it was not on a guitar that I own. I'm assuming alnico 2.
