You will experience a midrange spike with it...Do you need overdrive or just a clean and transparent boost? The TS line will color your tone.I like the Seymour Duncan pickup booster myself,but I also use an 808 on my board..

John, have you ever tried lifting the diodes in a DS-1? I found something about that on a DS-1 mod page, and it makes it a hellacious clean boost. I don't remember which two it is offhand, but it essentially neuters the tone and gain knobs, and gives tons of clean boost.

smashed39...for the tone you want some form of a screamer should work well to give your amp a kick in the rear since you want a bit of added grit and balls.
Stratman...if that's how you feel, please do not respond to any pedal post again lol. sure the klon is nice but it is NOT and never will be better than a screamer or any other OD for that matter...it's just different, that ALL!!! put it this way, some people like fenders and some like gibsons, some like marshalls and some like mesas, some like klons and some like screamers etc etc i could go on. different strokes for different folks and to say the klon "beats" another pedal "without trying" is just foolish.
JB...lol no, you just use a mini toggle to go from diodes to none....easy mod. sure you could do it with a stomp switch but you'd certainly need a new enclosure.

I'm aware it would be easiest with a mini-toggle. I've spent a bit of time inside pedals. However, I think it would be more practical with a footswitch, unless you think it makes more sense to bend down and throw a switch right before a solo than step on one.

I completely agree with you, Mike. I recently got a Klon and have been using it along with my TS9 (Analog Man 808 mod). With my Tele into the Caitlin, I can get a great "Brown Sugar" tone with the Tube Screamer alone, but not with the Klon alone. However, but the Klon in front of the TS, and I get an even richer TS tone. It's a bit too over-the-top for Keith Richards' style, but it sure sounds nice!
The bottom line is that I just can't get TS tones from the Klon, or vise versa. That's why I have both!
Oh, and I haven't tried the Klon with my Mesas yet, but I can tell you the TS sounds awesome as an overdrive for those amps as well.

Hell, I feel that way about different models of TS, never mind totally different pedals! Currently I'm the model of restraint and only own two different TS pedals.
...but if the right one comes along that could change at any time....especially for one of those new Keeley TS9DX beasts!

If it helps at all, I was looking for a tubescreamer to push my TSL60. I ended up deciding on a Maxon OD9, now my amp sounds killer. It cuts through when playing with my band, and just tightens up the sound when Im playing at home. Just another pedal to consider. Good luck.

I tried the Tube Screamer in the music store and it gave rich harmonics when cranking the level but not much gain it didnt cloud the amp OD tone. Thats defanetly what im looking for. Its actually gonna be my first OD pedal for doing this. I just got the DSL about a month ago I heard everyone talking about the tube screamers and DS-1 and i like the tube screamers much better.
I currently have the blues breaker but thats not quite what i want. its better suited for using it as a blues distortion on a clean amp.

How about using a ds-2, I don't have experience with a ds-1 but the ds-2 is supposed to be similar in one of its modes. The ds-2 already has a footswitch input for switching between modes on it. So I guess some changes could be made or possibly, if even at least possible, just putting a ds-1 circuit into the ds-2.

I use a TS9DX with my amp and I notice a change in the frequency response. But the change is perfect. The lump in the frequency curve pushes the right tones to make the amp growl a little without blasting harsh frequencies, and without having to turn the volume up too much. For the application you are interested in, any of the various incarnations of the Tube Screamer and its variations from other companies would be a fine choice. Maxon is definitely a good one. You may even want to consider the Visual Sound Route 66. I haven't tried it, but they describe it as a TS808 and Ross/Dyna compressor in one box.
For similar boosting uses, I frequently mess with compressors and EQs. Some people even use volume rocker pedals for a boost which is variable in real time.
