Anyone here tried the Mesa Eight:88?

Hi,

I'm starting to think about getting an "overkill" bass amp. I've had only one bass amp my entire life, and while it has never had a problem, it's 100W and 1x15 speaker won't cut it in the band I'm starting to play with. They are a full-stack type of band.

The Eight:88 looks pretty badass, and I can get a very slightly used one for what I'd spend on a vintage SVT (or less), which is one of the other options I'm considering. It would also cover just about anything in the future, being power switchable to medium and low power. It's also really convenient, at a surprisingly light 50 lb. (less than my current combo). I'm thinking of getting it with a 1x15 for sure (for the old band), and either a 2x10 or a 4x10 in addition (for the new band).

Any experiences with this amp?

Thanks.

I've never played an Eight:88, but I had a chance to play a Prodigy the other day. I have to admit to being a bit underwhelmed; it sounded good and all, but it really wasn't anything special as I'd been lead to expect. I used to have a later Bass 400 (not the plus) and currently have access to an SVT 3-Pro, and I'd say the Prodigy sounds very similar to the 3-Pro and not as good as the Bass 400. The only thing the new Mesas have over a Bass 400(+) or an all-tube SVT is the weight savings. Given the reliability / cost of power tubes and volume you'd typically be able to play at, I'd just get a decent hybrid instead.
