Re: Anyone here using Logic Pro X?
So here's a confession -- even though I've been using logic for years, I've only scratched the surface of what it's capable of. Until last week I'd never spent any significant time in the "environment" window -- now I realize I could have saved myself a significant amount of time and money if I'd taken a look under the hood earlier. This is logic 9 I'm talking about, but hopefully LPX has it as well. My god. It's so powerful!
As for the drummer stuff, I've always had trouble doing drums and have used easy drummer and superior drummer but was never satisfied with the results. So not long ago I invested in a used mpc studio (which is an absolute pleasure to use once you get over the initial hiccups). The other day when I was messing around in logic's environment I had a cool melody going and wanted to see how well I could do banging out beats on my midi keyboard with quantize turned on and the velocity input turned up a good bit. I loaded up superior drummer and used the markers to set a four bar loop, and y'know, I feel silly for not having done that all along. I don't think it was as "fun" as using an mpc, but it was about as easy. I figured out how to get the mpc software to recognize superior drummer, so I may try that on the next song

. Anyway, if logic drummer isn't doing what you want automatically you should try it out. Set the markers to loop and set quantize to 16 on the channel strip. Record your kick and snare, stop, press record again and add the next part. That way it's easy to undo layers. You can loop it as many times as you'd like when you're done, and if it really seems like too much time commitment to bang out properly intricate drums another good trick is to copy/paste the kick/snare layer instead of looping and then perform variations over top live. As long as you play some semblance of a pattern quantize will have your back and it will sound better than the pre-made ezdrummer stuff every time.
Anyway, I found some great instructional videos on using/exploiting logic's environment that might be helpful to some of you. They helped me get a much better grasp of it and at the same time realize I have a lot left to learn.
