Anyone Hip to Mike Stern?

Have always loved him. Great player, composer, and great to listen to in interviews. Anyone know why in his signature Yamaha guitar, Yamaha puts a Duncan SM-1 59 in zebra; yet, the guitar he "actually" plays, and I think he has a bunch but usually uses one in particular as his #1. The neck pickup is an SM-1 59 in double black. I know this question is really a nothing question other than pure curiosity.

I've noticed that with every signature guitar I own, they always change at least 1-2 things that make it not exactly like the original. I don't know if it's so that someone can't relic it and try to sell it like an original or what. But almost every signature guitar has something that is not like the original.

ive seen him in pics with a zebra 59 in the neck as well, but usually its a flipped black 59n and always a black tele hot rails. cool guitar for sure and hes got a very cool playing style to go with it

The only guitar I have ever seen him play with a zebra neck humbucker is his Telecaster from before the Yamaha sig deal.

maybe thats what i saw too? cant remember the specific guitar, but i do remember the zebra

The thing about his Yamaha guitar, Yamaha went with the absolute worst bridge design. That 6-saddle ashtray bridge in horrible. Any time I have bought a Telecaster with that bridge, I replaced it with a Wilkinson compensated brass saddle bridge and the tone and performance noticeably improved. I know, Yamaha is paying homage and using what Mike used in his Fender Telecaster; but it would be a huge improvement if they went with another vintage style Telecaster bridge. Just my $0.02.....

I have been analyzing pics of his guitars, old an new. The commonality? A flipped neck humbucker with the screw coil toward the bridge. My guess would be that they are all SH-1n models too.

Here's probably my favorite video of Mike. 1992 concert with the Brecker Brothers in Barcelona. He's using that Telecaster. Simply phenomenal.
