Anyone into 'Extreme' EQ'ing their guitars/amp ?

Is there anyone who feels a 10Band EQ is not "enough" and is using something like this instead ?

Or is that just plain old 1980's style OVER KILL ???

Re: Anyone into 'Extreme' EQ'ing their guitars/amp ?

If I could justify that much space/time/money on it, I'd love to have something like that for my acoustic guitar, as it can be difficult to get a good sound live sometimes. But for what I do, it's much more effective to just have an LR Baggs or a Tonebone.

Re: Anyone into 'Extreme' EQ'ing their guitars/amp ?

I dunno about that, but I dime the B/M/T on my amp 95% of the time

Re: Anyone into 'Extreme' EQ'ing their guitars/amp ?

I usually run my bass control in the bottom 1/4 to 1/3 of the pot's rotation, and I also use the amp's built-in e.q. switching set up for further bass cut and treble boost. That's about as "extreme" as my e.q.ing gets. A gizmo like the one in the pic would cause more problems for me than it solved.

Let the soundies deal with it. I use an MXR 10 cranked up mids high. But I'm an old fart who can't hear over 11K. lol Watt?

I would drive myself crazy with that, and then say screw it.

Re: Anyone into 'Extreme' EQ'ing their guitars/amp ?

I use an old Rocktron ProQ, great guitar EQ. The phase stuff is usually lame, like a wannabe BBE thing but the bass and parametric mids are really powerful. By extreme I don't think the number of bands qualifies alone, the amount of boost/cut range is the extreme part. More bands means more cumulative boost/cut range as bands overlap, but a +/- 18dB parametric is pretty powerful too. I use a lot of 15 bands in various algorithms too.

Billy Gibbons does. He uses a programmable EQ live that makes every guitar sound like Pearly Gates

Re: Anyone into 'Extreme' EQ'ing their guitars/amp ?

. . . ^ ^ ^ W O W !!!

There's a video online. Basically Billy Gibbon's guitar tech takes Pearly Gates and plays it through an EQ analyzer to get the EQ curve of Pearly. Then he takes each of Gibbon's guitars, runs it through that analyzer to adjust the EQ to get the EQ curve of Pearly, and has a preset for each guitar.

Re: Anyone into 'Extreme' EQ'ing their guitars/amp ?

I'd use one since I am very picky about EQ, especially my mids and low end and how they work together, while leaving more than enough room for the bass and drums. Just not much into rack effects but this is an exception; more like the other half to an amp head.

It also matters where in the signal chain the equalizer is located.

For example, I use the four band parametric EQ in my G-major post-gain. I use my Dunlop Q-zone as a mid boost pre gain. In my experience, you can really change the flavor of distortion when boosting frequencies pre-gain, then evening out the overall tone using a post-gain EQ.

Didn't Dimebag Darrel do something similar to that effect with his rig?

That picture made me feel completely and totally inadequate. I'll admit openly that when I gig with my fender amps, I usually just EQ flat, and set the pedals to where I want the tone to be for different drive sounds, and then I just mess with the tone know on the guitar.

I guess I'm a few years back on this newfangled trend.
