Anyone Know about Ibanez 542R

I acquired and Ibanez 542R several years ago do not know very much about it. I would like to replace the PUs to put something in that sounds a little warmer. Anyone know anything about this guitar (what type of wood, type of stock PUs, etc.) or a good set of replacement PUs for it?

Re: Anyone Know about Ibanez 542R

Very nice axe, you don't see many of them around; made only in 1992.

There were two models, the 542 (like yours), and 442. The latter has an alder body, maple, and HSS; while yours is basswood, rosewood board, stacked pups. The SB2 is supposed to be voiced like a humbucker, while the SB1 more like a single coil. Cast iron whammy, apparently.

As for pups, depends on what kind of sound you're after. I don't have experience with single coils in basswood.

If you're wanting to stick with rail humbuckers, I'm willing to bet a set of Hot Rails would rock in there, as would a set of the L'il '59s... a L'il Screamin' Demon in the Bridge would work well with the basswood, too... Really, about the only thing I wouldn't recommend would be the Vintage Rail or Cool Rail sets, since you're looking for a warmer sound.

And then there are all the Dimarzio offerings...

Nice axe - enjoy! Random thought - if you're not happy with the trem, check how the Wilkinson spaces out...
