Just wondering what they were like, what they were made of, I've seen some used that are pretty cheap.

One of my guitars is a Framus body from the sixties.
It is a Les Paul shape but not solid all the way through.

As you can see I've a whole new scratch plate and Humbuckers. I had a Fender single coil in the Neck and a single coil Gibson in the bridge for about 15 years ,then I put the HB's in.

The pics not mine ,but it's almost the same. There's another block where a centre pickup would sit.

It is quite acoustic because of the body design and makes more noise unplugged than a standard solid body.It gives it a tonal quality that solids don't have.

I had a new neck put on mine about four years ago[It's original neck was removed some 30+ years ago.].When I went to pick it up the Luthier guy was walking around his workshop playing it. He didn't want to give it back.

Framus quality was very inconsistent in the 60's Some good ,some bad.
The pickups from memory were some what weak in output but a reasonable sound.[I'm referring to the pups like on the triple pickup version]

Mine was originally a two pickup version of this one.

The scratch plate is "metal".

You'll find a lot of models are named " Hollywood"

A good condition LP shape or the Cutaway shape can fetch over $1000.

I'd love to dig up another one, but they're "rare".

Can I ask where?[I live in Australia]

Re: Anyone know anything about vintage Framus Electrics?

I found a lot of great info here:
http://www.framus-vintage.de/modules/infos/info.php?katID=4602&cl=EN
when I was researching my 61 Framus Studio 5/51.

Having played Golden Vultures Framus,I can tell you it is a very cool thing. Ultra lightweight with a really nice jazz/rock vibe to it. Very nice!

When I had my repair shop,we had a few Framus' through the door. I wasn't really excited by the standard pickups and their bridges always seemed to be kinda cheesy. The majority of the ones I saw were hollow or semi hollow and had ply tops and backs with blocks running through them or stategically placed for strength.
I always likened them to Rickenbackers. They had a unique sound and feel. If you're at all familiar with stuff like Goya or Burns or any other 60's Euro stuff, you'll know what to expect. If the prices are cheap enough,it would be worth picking at least one up for your collection/experimentations.

I don't know much about the current Framus guitars and amps, but I do know they appear to be insanely overpriced!

Hope this helps.

Cheers,PJ

Jan Akkerman of Focus used to play LP's, and then Framus built signature guitars for him, and they were LP-like. probably not a hugely useful piece of information, but that's about my limit of Framus knowledge, hopefully i can learn more from this thread.

and yeah, Golden Vulture's guitar shown above is great, it has a classic sound.

All I remember about them is that I didn't think the Framus guitars had the right tone needed to play rock and roll and were not the equal of a Gibson or Fender - and that Bill Wyman played a Framus bass for quite a long time because he has small hands and Framus necks were skinny.

Jack,do you still have it?

I don't know if you've checked out the history of Framus .They shut up shop around the mid 70's,but the son who retained the trading name started up again ;Firstly making "Warwick" basses. They were/are high quality[and pricey].He quickly established a market and started making 6 stringers under the Framus banner again.I can't say I've played any of the new range extensively, but the ones I tried were very good guitars.
Then again who'd pay 'new' Gibson prices around here? Not me.

Bill Wyman used one for years in the early days of the Stones.I think I've seen pictures of Brian Jones with one. Lennon and McCartney used Acoustics of theirs.

Fek there's some fill in music on the TV at the mo!

Bing Crosby crooning " I feel so gay, In a melancholy way" Hahahahaha!!!!!!

Jack,do you still have it?

Sure do!

It's a sweet little 3/4 size jazz box. It's missing a bridge saddle at the mo. I made a new one from bone a while ago,but it's gone missing too. So,one day, when I get 5 minutes to spare........

Re: Anyone know anything about vintage Framus Electrics?

MMM! Nice . I did a bridge replacement on a blond Framus acoustic similar to that about 15 years ago. Some one had fitted a Metal bridge to it.
I made it from an acoustic base/mount[?] that I had around and a violin bridge blank that I bought from a violin maker/repairer.:14:

Re: Anyone know anything about vintage Framus Electrics?

Hmmm,I must have knocked the bridge out of whack just before I took the pic.
It's weird, this is a guitar that I have contemplated selling so many times, and just before I do,I play it for a little while and fall in love with it again.
It definitely has something that other guitars lack, but I'm not sure what it is. I just enjoy it. :dunno:
GV,I'll bring it to the next SDUGF get together.

Cheers,PJ

The Blond one I did the bridge thing to was a thick bodied cutaway style. When I had it and played it I loved the tone of it.I figured it had something to do with the workers luthiers were also violin and other stringed instrument makers and worked more Violin based tones into them. They seemed really silky and clean.

Re: Anyone know anything about vintage Framus Electrics?

I built an amp for a guy who plays jazz and, at the time, he was playing a jazz box similar to PJ's, but it was full-sized and very nice...it looked very very similar to the one in PJ's pic just above. This guy eventually moved on to something more contemporary and upmarket, but that Framus of his just looks so inviting and is a pretty decent instrument......

I remember as a teenager back in the early '70's, Framus guitars seemsed so ' 60's ' and as a result, were largely snubbed by myself and people of my age. Of course, many many years later, i look back and see such items as being classics from their eras.

Re: Anyone know anything about vintage Framus Electrics?

Well I just got back from PJ's place and that little beast is a PEARL!!
It's got this amazing laminated neck, similar to the Kubicki bass's,
great workmanship and a killer parlour guitar tone.

It would be rude of me to disclose what PJ paid for it......... he STOLE IT!!!!

Man, you gotta luv dumbass pawnbrokers:friday:

Re: Anyone know anything about vintage Framus Electrics?

Need help with a vintage Framus electric. I bought a Framus back in 71 when I was a kid with money I had been saving for years. It has a serial number of 10012-71. What I have found out so far is it is a 71 Framus. I sent a photo to the museum and was told is was a very rare 102 Starto. I've looked but Cannot find anything on a 102 Starto. They were not able to provide me with anything else. Can anyone help me out with anymore information, I've not taken this guitar out of its case in Over 30 years
