Anyone play a Jazz pickup?

I'm thinking of putting a Jazz into the neck of my Hum Hum Jackson. Basswood body I think, with Rosewood on Maple neck. Will this pickup be able to give me a mellow sound with a clean amp setting with the guitar's volume knob down a little? I'm looking for sort of a "cool jazz" tone.

Also, what would the high gain sound be like?

Thanks -Matt

I've played the one Wattage has in his LP. It sounds real nice. I'm sure it can handle high gain with no problem. I'm thinking of putting one in my SG to replace the '57 Classic.

Hopefully Jolly will join in. He gets some great rock tones with his Jazz set. The Jazz isn't alot differant from a 59N...just a little less bass and more sparkle. If you want a big full sound with a touch more clarity than the 59N, the Jazz is it. I wish Duncan would rename the Jazz...because that pickup still rocks. Lew

Jazz all the way!!!!! I play mine in the neck of my LP Custom through a Dual Rectifier and it rocks under high gain!! I was skeptical when I first got it because I thought it was engineered for clean tones without much regard for rockin... but that is so not the case! I totally agree with Lew.... they need to rename this pup!!

That pretty much sums it up.

I use a Jazz neck in my hum equipped LP's, great pup handles gain really well. Has a real nice clean sound too.

Re: Anyone play a Jazz pickup?

Just replaced a '59n with a Jazz neck and it works a lot better. More clarity and a bit less bass. Perfect.

Re: Anyone play a Jazz pickup?

Does the jazz really sound that great? I want a pup for the neck .I want warm smooth tone but it should not be muddy. Thats why I am hesitating to go in for the 59N. I dont even have the 30day return option as I am in India. My concern with the Jazz is will it sound BRIGHT?. I absolutly hate a Biteing bright tone for Rythum. And Yes the big Q can I make the JAzz sound like a paf if i roll back the tone control?

Oh by the way this for the new custom axe with HUM HUM configration, with a JB in the bridge, and a Mahogany body with a maple neck. I paly classic rock, blues and Hard rock.

Re: Anyone play a Jazz pickup?

The Jazz is an incredible neck pick up - it has no problem rocking - it is probably my favorite neck P/U besides if you needed that extra extra bite you've got the JB in the bridge....... Go for it!
