Im looking to get a bass and a bass amp...i play mostly metal. Not sure what my budget is (pretty low though). anyone have any suggestions? the amp would have to get loud enough for a band.

Re: anyone play bass?

If you want a good/professional bass amp at a reasonable price, check out the Carvin's. I played thru Carvin bass amps for 12 years in a band and only got good compliments about my sound.

Metal basses.... cheap... dunno... an import Jackson is quite nice and not that expansive...
If you want a REALLY cheap amp thats loud and nothing else.. get a Behringer...

Re: anyone play bass?

try on ebay or local shops for a washburn XB series, my XB-500 was long discontinued when i got it, and its feckin' heavy - makes a strat feel like a toy :laugh2:

the scale length on them is longer than other basses i've seen, and they're 24 fret.. 5 strings are pretty common in this model type!

Good Beginner´s -> intermediate setup:
Used Washburn Axxess, Mercury or Bantam series bass (XS, MB and BM, respectively. Or a Used MIM Fender P bass, or an Ibanez Soundgear 400, or a lower end Yamaha...Or a Johnson...Or an Import Jackson...., Or the OLP basses I´ve heard are good for the dough....all depending on cash (That´s why I wanted to know before answering)
a Hartke Transporter (1x15, 160w, about 250$ used) is IMO one of THE perfect amps for Heavier bass styles, the aluminum cone gives Hartke cabs a nice cut, püarticularly important on smaller amps...the old Fender M-80 Bass combos sound pretty good as well, and can be had for burger and a beer.

Should be under 500$ used with most choices. If you can stretch up to 1k, give the high end Yamaha and Ibanez basses a whirl, and definitely look into Carvin no matter what you decide on ;)

My personal Setup is a Washburn XS-4 w/ Bartolini pickups into a Fender M-80 bass head, into a Hohner /Eminence 1x15 cab. My first electric setup EVER, BTW, before I started playing guitar again ;)

+1 to the schecter basses. If you hotrod a squire j-bass it's a helluva bass too. If price isn't a problem my favorites that I've tried are the muscicmans and the real j-basses but I'm not enough of a bass player to ever justify something that nice.

As for amps- ampeg is like... THE bass amp to have, and I like the sound of quite a few fenders too(even the cheapish ones).

Re: anyone play bass?

My Cort bass is more of a funk bass but she's got a nice sound, if you try one and like it call me:D it's for sale.

Actually it probably wouldn't be "cool" but Peavey's entry level bass is under $200 and a TNT range Peavey amp is probably 4-500. Bass amps are pricey because they need so much power to get bass frequencies on par with guitar.
