Anyone play the Kirk Hammet Signature Randall?

Re: Anyone play the Kirk Hammet Signature Randall?

I've only heard bad news about Randall amps. At first I was real curious about their modular amps but after playing a couple of modules I was unimpressed. Most impressive was a 50 1x12 combo that sells for about $350. It sounds pretty good for a cheapie amp.

Re: Anyone play the Kirk Hammet Signature Randall?

well some of there stuff is good. for instance, i have a randall 4X12 that is the only cabinet i will play through, on bass or guitar. but it could be their "cbs" period right now, since when i contacted randall for info on the cab, they said it was made long ago by a company that they knew nothing about:smack::cussing:

Re: Anyone play the Kirk Hammet Signature Randall?

I played a Lynch Box half-stack a few weeks ago...

F'in KILLER "rock" amp... not cheap at $2000+ for a loaded head... but wow. Sounded HUGE, very responsive.

Build quality though...

Ehhhh...

One of the power tubes had the "fail" light on and the modules didn't sit in the head very well. Didn't feel solid...

Played a few other Randalls too... A regular 100 watt head with modules & it wasn't nearly as cool as the Lynch... it was good in a rather generic way, but didn't have the size & girth of the Lynch. Not even close! Modules also felt kind of flimsy...

The Hammet head with the modules wasn't in yet, I think it's at the store now...

I plugged into a Hammet half-stack thinking it was the tube one but it wasn't... it was the $1000 solid-state deal...

Blach.

:thumbsdow

Best thing I can say is "generic solid state" amp.

I was most disapointed about the lack of a built-in wah...

Re: Anyone play the Kirk Hammet Signature Randall?

I haven't played it, but there's a couple vids on youtube showcasing the tube version. I thought it did a pretty good job of capturing his signature Metallica tone. If i'm not mistaken, that amp is just a slightly different version than the Randall RM100.......only with different modules for the most part. Personally, I like the idea that you can get an amp and just switch out the preamp modules to make changes to your tone rather than spending alot of money on new heads.

That said, there's no amp in my near future.

Re: Anyone play the Kirk Hammet Signature Randall?

thats what i liked about it too. metallica's my favorite band, and i figured his amp would be a good place to start in my quest for ultimate tone. i was hoping the solid state version would be close to the tube amp(note:close), cause i aint got the cash for the tubes. and if i didnt like the sound, i could always swap out modules. but like i said, his stuff would atleast be a good jump off point

Re: Anyone play the Kirk Hammet Signature Randall?

I also have nothing against the solid state stuff, but I simply haven't heard that version. It's really refreshing to hear the open-mindedness on this forum with regard to SS and modeling technology. Most every other board i've been on has an overpowering elitism about it regarding that stuff.

Here's the Guitar World review of the KHRM100 (tube version). Really fat tones with a well done representation of Kirk's clean tones as well.

Re: Anyone play the Kirk Hammet Signature Randall?

No, they both split duties on the cleans too.

Re: Anyone play the Kirk Hammet Signature Randall?

I wonder why they put a clean on there...on the albums, all clean parts are James, right?

That guitar world review was horribly recorded. I used to own a Randall Rm-100 and they are sweet heads. Some modules suck imho while others are great. I upgraded to the Egnater preamp and still kept 1 of my randall modules fwiw. I like it as much if not more than my Mark iv if that says anything. Though, that's what i use when i try to dial metallica like-tones.

I agree 100% - I had an RM100 also. I had the 1086, XTC and the Randall Clean (changed a cap on mine) modules. They were excellent, on par with any big name, expensive brand of amps. I only sold it because I only have so much room and a Mesa F-30, Road King II, Stiletto Stage II, and Mark IVA cover everything well enough.

The RM100 is designed to get great tones that would require a lot of different amps. Well I have a lot of amps, so something had to go.
