Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

That may explain why I was getting mostly hard rock/metal tones (which sounded great) but no good classic rock/southern rock tones when I tried one out this past week-end. I'll have to check it out again and try those options.

Yep, for classic rock, set the dial to class A, use input 2, and keep the gain below 6 or so. Set the presence and dampening to taste. Good luck!

Thanks!

I recognize your avatar but not your name. Did you change your name recently, or am I just a little drunk at the momen?

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

Yep, Ive played one.. Pretty cool.. wasnt something Id trade my Ultra plus for, but it seemed like there was a bunch of good usable tones..

Id really like to learn to like the Windsor. GREAT price on that one, but alittle too one toned.

I'm not sure what price they're running at, but a Traynor YCV40 1x12 with a Celestion V 30 (they have a 1x12 YCV40 w/ one standard too) would be around 500-650 or 300-400 used and would have a bit more of a Fender Deluxe type of sound, which would do really well for country and push a nice rocking crunch sound. I have a 2x10 YCV40 and the cleans are really clear and rich with the reverb from 3 and up. The distortion doesn't get into crazy heavy metal sounds unless you use a pedal, but the amp's tube overdrive (2x6L6) is really nice for hard rock with the gain cranked and around 5 or 6 does great blues/classic rock drive.

I considered a Valveking before I got my Traynor, and the VK is a fine amp, VERY reasonable price for what you're getting, but I thought it left something to be desired when I played through one at a music store.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

Had one for a year. A tube change to JJ tubes made a world of difference. Tried a better celestion speaker, and could not tell that much improvement. Cleans were extremely sterile but spanky and punchy. Gain channel was fairly versatile, although I really only found one setting I liked, which was one that gave a very fluid overdrive that had a little Satriani flavor, although that wasn't really what I was looking for in the amp. For the money, it was an OK amp, not great, but OK.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

I have reviewed some comments and videos on the tube about the vk100. I play southern rock, country and classic rock with more of a modern edge. I didn't make that clear when i started this thread. So far from what i have heard i like the amp for the price. of Course i a plexi head. I love the smooth distortion that they throw out so i might get the Tonebone PLexi pedal to satisfy that. I am also gonna send in my ts9 to get the baked mod from keeley, a compressor pedal, chorus, delay, flanger, noise suppressor, and a wah. So far I am looking at the Keeley compressor, a Boss chorus, a dd7 boss delay, a mxr flanger, a zakk wylde wak, and the mxr noise suppressor. Might throw in a DS1 keeley mod pedal and a crunch box. Just seeing if anyone thinks these are decent choices. This will be my first tube amp/stomp box setup. Just getting away from solid state and digitalmodeling from processors. Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

HAs anyone demo'd or own a valveking? I am thinking about getting one but have heard a few soundclips on the tube but I want anyone's personal opinion on it. I playa mix of classic rock, country, southern rock.. get the point. Thanks

I tried one at a music store. Played it for an hour. It was OK, but the problem I had with it was, no matter what I did with the eq controls, it seemed to sound the same. The clean channel was not that bad from what I remember. I could have taken the head version home for 423.00, but I ended up passing it up. I had brought a friend with me for a second opinion and without me saying a word, he said he had the same opinion.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

Solo Guitar Stewie owns one... you might ask him what he thinks of it.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

I play southern rock, country and classic rock with more of a modern edge.

I would suggest you go for a Peavey Classic 50 for the tones you are looking for, ten to one over the valveking. The Classic 50 would run you about the same if you bought used. Even at that, I would save up longer and get the classic 50, it's twice the amp for the tones you suggest. The classic 30 is great too, but I think the 50 has a little better tone overall.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

I know you didn't ask for amp suggestions, but I think the classic 30 may fit your style better. I thought the valveking combo was ok, but the head seemed better for some reason. I love my classic 30.

The Classic 30's are a great amp but I found that as I cranked the second channel the tone got very middy on me and became tough to control. I found it very ice-picky, which is funny because at lower volumes it's SUCH a dark sounding amp to my ears.

It went from one end of the spectrum to the other and I just didn't find it usable on either end.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

Two words for you: chugga chugga.

For the styles you're describing (i.e. not chugga chugga stuff) you will be much happier with a Traynor YCV 40WR.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

I have even played a couple of Crate tube amps that sound better than the Valveking. It's OK, and like I said, it had one maybe two good settings, but nothing to write home about. The relatively Cheap Vox Ad50vt modeling amp sounds better, and does ten times as much. Play it a while next to some of these other amps before you buy, bet you'll change your mind.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

I own a ValveKing 1x12 combo. It was my first tube amp and was a good deal. I got a rather good clean tone, and I was able to get enough gain out of it to mask my sloppy playing with the stock crappy pickups on my first Ibanez. Honestly, I don't care much for the gain with higher-output pickups; it strikes me as too fizzy. However, the gain channel with the realtively lower-output stock pickups on my Wal-Mart strat-copy sounded nicely crunchy with the gain boost off. I'll second the comment about the EQ knobs not seeming to do much.

I do still sometimes play it though. Like I said the cleans are good, and IMO, a bit juicier than the ones I get from my Mesa/Boogie Nomad. The gain on the Valveking is a bit thin and fizzy but when I run it at the same time as the gain on my Nomad, the lows from the 4x12 I have the nomad using combining with the highs from the ValveKing made for an interesting sound, kinda tighter. By comparison, the ValveKing, with it's open back 1x12 has almost no lows at all. But to be fair, I *am* comparing an entry-level Peavey to a Mesa.

While not an awesome amp, you can upgrade it into something better. The speaker can be changed out, and Merceruy Magnetics makes a replacement choke and output tranny for it. NOS preamp and power tubes would probably make a world of difference too. But be mindful that for the money one would spend buying and upgrading a ValveKing, one could have purchased a much better amp to begin with.

All in all, it's a decent amp, but there are better options out there if one can save up a few more pennies.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

I have a VK 100 head. Stock it was a bit muddy and had an odd sounding upper-mids.

The key for me was getting the right speaker and tube combination that would make the amp more crisp without being spikey.

A good place to start is by adding a 12AT7 into the preamp section. The amp has plenty of gain and adding the AT7 gives it less gain while strengthening the mids a bit.

Finding the right tubes that give the amp a quality sound is another key. Gain over a less than desirable sound isn't a winning recipe. Try different tube combinations.

Well I think I have made my mind up on the Peavey classic fifty 4-10 combo. With a Carbon copy delay, Ibanez ts9, Crybaby, small clone chorus, and holy grail reverb, smart gate. Anyone have a comment on this?

You're getting closer to the Fender sound, for sure with that. It won't have the bass of a 4x12, but it's gonna sound good for classic/Southern rock.

Don't think you'll be dissapointed.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

When I started playing in bars and such a few years ago my playing was masked by the high gain amp modeling, for cover up of my mistakes and make it sound better. But over the last year I have been changing my presets to cleaner sounds with some over drive and the occassional heavier gain(think low gain plexi) so my playing has gotten alot better and cleaner. Thats why I think I am leaning more toward a cleaner distorted sound.

Re: Anyone played a Valveking? Comments?

I have the 100 Head and since I am not about to shell out mega bucks for the Marshall of my dreams I find it good value at the price point. I did change two of the speakers with a pair of Eminance Private Jacks in their matching 4*12 cabinet and found that improved it somewhat. May replace the remaining teo valveking speakers with another flavour Eminance in an x pattern later. Other than that tubes can make a slight tonal change also. But overall like I said am happy.
