Anyone remember Don Mare?

I have a feeling there's very few who know tele pickups like he does.

I checked out his website and all the glowing reviews, and it seems like he's doing good, which I'm glad to hear. He was an old member here, and I even met him at a gig of his in Burbank. He's a really good tele picker, and a wealth of tele knowledge.

Re: Anyone remember Don Mare?

I heard a clip of him playing a tele through a blues jr that was amazing.

If I am ever in the position to do so, I will buy a set from him.

Re: Anyone remember Don Mare?

Don hangs out over on the TDPRI forum
I see him there quite often , He's an old school teleman
& I agree a wealth tele knowledge

Re: Anyone remember Don Mare?

Yeah...read everything he says on his website. He's done his homework.

He's the ultimate authority on Roy Buchanan. That's why Seymour likes him too. Seymour was good friends with Roy. Don Mare has torn that tone down to minute details, like no other pickup maker.

Re: Anyone remember Don Mare?

I remember him being persecuted pretty hard for being so obsessed and for claiming things(like the big-in-the-middle coil build) that ran afoul of accepted wisdom. Hot-headed as he was, I'd rather have him around than the guys who ran him off.

Re: Anyone remember Don Mare?

I've run into Don a few times, once at a So Cal Jam (where we got into a pinch harmonic battle with our Fenders during Voodoo Child) and once at NAMM... cool dude! Definitely a mad scientist with tone. He really knows his stuff!

Re: Anyone remember Don Mare?

donzo and i used to bat things back and forth all the time, we called ourselves mad tone scientists. cool, albeit a little crazy guy. miss seeing him around

Re: Anyone remember Don Mare?

I remember the "old Don Mare"
hes changed allot, there's been no fire breathing online for about five years now, that's why I'm a welcome guest on the other forums too..

back in the day "WE ALL" got pretty intense -
most of us were relatively new to computers -
KEYBOARD RAGE, got the best of most all of us.

it took a few years to learn to roll with the punches, but for the last few years no one can evoke any RAGE from me online, Ive been there done that and paid a high price, my advise to anyone having issues with online tempers, is to
take the high road, bite your tongue/fingers, whatever it takes... just don't do it!... you'll be the better man for it!

PS.. miss ya all too.. I won't be at NAMM - cause I need Knee surgery really soon and I'll be unable to walk NAMM and I don't want to ride my Mobility Scooter all around NAMM, don't want to be seen as handicapped - cause its only temporary,

whats new? ~ I've been working allot with Sublime With Rome on the new Tour, all the guitars and basses have been totally reworked and necks were worked on so their all very stage worthy guitars -

also got my name in the credits of JACKA-SS 3-D
for working on guitars and pickups with Chris & Loomis's bands

I'm usually just on TDPRI & my EMAIL, cause that's all I have time for anymore.. I actually am back on all the larger Forums, but I just look mostly..

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FOLKS!

PS... "Google Alerts" tipped me off to this thread

No truer words have been spoken, when it comes to forum etiquette. Guitar players can come on strong by nature......the bad assness translates well onto the guitar, but rarely onto typed words!

I'm glad to see you saw this thread, because you're a guy totally worthy of respect. I hope everything's all well and good with you. I'll revert back to my favorite saying...."tough times don't last, tough people do."

Re: Anyone remember Don Mare?

Don is an old friend and having purchased a set of his pups, I can verify that Don Mare pups are excellent tone machines.

Thanks Don.

Re: Anyone remember Don Mare?

I don't know about much the Man nor his pickups, except what they were saying about him on TFF, which wasn't very gratuitous, but his website comes off as hokey/gimmicky to me.
'Just sayin' ', like they say.
Not that I buy into any website salespitch withour having researched the product, but man, his screams 'cheese', not just to me either.
Anyway, like I said, I don't really know.

The TFF also, _got over_ kicking me off~ and any fighting we in-gauged in too.. and stopped roasting me, it was 5 years or more ago anyways.. that's too long to continue hating someone for fighting right?..

My web site looks "Cheesy" to me too now that you mention it... its definitively a cheese coloredyellow, and has some pretty goofy slogans/statements.., those slogans I made up long ago-when I first started the website - I was pretty excited about the products, maybe its time to redo all those and get more serious??

ps.. the customers never said anything negative about me or _the products_ in the last 5 years.. I got a good solid rating / reviews out there.

thanks!!
Don

Ain't that the truth. But the essence of what brought me back into line was the quality of the forum itself, and the way its administered. In that vien, I've always found this forum second to none. I'm glad they ban political and religious topics and I wouldn't involve myself in them even if they didn't. (Now that is. I "slipped" a couple times "back then".) :)

Anyway, nice to see you again Don, even though I never knew you very well. Perhaps I'll get to know you better now.

You really don’t know!

Don Mare make excellent pickups - I do know because I installed a set into one of my Stratocasters and it NAILs the tone that I have in my 57 Stratocaster.

Now, I use the Strat with Don Mare pups for gigging and leave the expensive collector’s Strat in a storage case at home.

Don, You can use my recommendations anytime you want and thanks for the great sounding pups!

Re: Anyone remember Don Mare?

I always liked Don and he had some intersting ideas. I'm glad he has turned things around and is doing what he wants. I'm also glad that he is managing to find new solutions to problems, which some day might find their way into wider use. If someone isn't pushing the envelope things get pretty stale.
