man i remember these amps..

played them during my middle school rehearsals..
first marshalls i ever plugged into

and i remember them sounding actually good..
clean, od1, od2, reverb

i really liked the contour knob on that amp..most useful knob on that amp..

sometimes i think of just grabbing one for nostalgia's sake..

anyone used/tried one?:drive:

Re: Anyone remember the OLD marshall valvestates?

A friend has an 8040 laying around his house. That contour knob was really make or break with those amps. A bad setting and the guitar simply disappeared! It sounds very buzzy, but he's got it set up with the OD/Distortion Boss pedal, all in one.

That things has a tube on the pre, right? Talk about a waste. :firing:

Re: Anyone remember the OLD marshall valvestates?

I had one, I'm not sure about the model but it had chorus to it. I was ok for the time, but not great at all.

Re: Anyone remember the OLD marshall valvestates?

I had the second generation VS100. Loved the amp but got too caught up in the tube amp hype.... I liked it better than the TSL amps. Not as nice as my JCM800 though

Me too! I loved my VS100. Sometimes I wish I still had it. I played so many shows with that thing.

Re: Anyone remember the OLD marshall valvestates?

A friend/guy who played in a band who played with mine during a period (we opened for each other a few times) had a 8080... pretty nice. Wasn't the best sounding amp out there but certainly not the worse.

Re: Anyone remember the OLD marshall valvestates?

They sounded infinately better than the new ones, way more raunchy and "Marshall" in character.

Re: Anyone remember the OLD marshall valvestates?

My 1st amp was a 1x12 8040 combo with a knackered clean channel :D

Re: Anyone remember the OLD marshall valvestates?

Ha ha! Across the pond, but a world away!

Re: Anyone remember the OLD marshall valvestates?

I had the old 8240, with the built-in analog stereo chorus and two 12" speakers.

The beauty of that, was that it had a true stereo power section, and effects loop returns.

So if you had even a bare-bones stereo rack unit, you could pan your dry signal hard left, and the effected signal hard right, and get a nice stereo separation between the two independent signals.

I really should've kept that one around just for kicks.

Re: Anyone remember the OLD marshall valvestates?

They have the old one at my local guitar center. It sounds bad, but in a good way. Sorta like Death.

Re: Anyone remember the OLD marshall valvestates?

I still have and occasionally use my Marshall VS65R. This was my first Marshall amp. It still sounds great today.

I agree, the older valvestates sound much better than the new ones. The new ones sound like a bee hive to me...

Re: Anyone remember the OLD marshall valvestates?

Yeah! This is what we need - a nostalgic, older-is-better movement to convince the masses that old solid-state Marshalls are the true path to tonal Nirvana. Their eBay prices will explode, and I will finally be able, cheaply and quietly, to replace my beloved 4010 and JMP 2203.

I can't believe what I'm reading...a thread about valvestates sounding good!?!?!?! :eyecrazy:

haahaha. I can understand the nostalgic factor though.

Every so once in a while, I get a hankering to play a solid state peavy with that awful supersat distortion and built in chorus.

Re: Anyone remember the OLD marshall valvestates?

I used to have a 60W red-knob Fender that made my friends VS run for cover...those things are sleepers for sure, and they'd part yer hair at 100 yards. VS...meh. Only the lead chanel sounded really good to me, and it warn't THAT good.

Re: Anyone remember the OLD marshall valvestates?

I had an 8080 for quite a while. A cracking amp! Both channels worked on mine too!!
