Anyone remember this??

Re: Anyone remember this??

OK... I just don't get it. I like Hendrix's normal stuff, but that particular rendition of the Star Spangled Banner is just AWFUL, in my opinion. I'll probably get flamed for it, but it sounds similar to something a beginner would do whilst trying to learn how to play it properly.

I just don't get it... sorry. :(

Re: Anyone remember this??

wow. i thought it sounded terrible too. i love hendrix's playing onsongs like all along the watchtower, but his "solos" inbeetween lines like "rockets red glare", "bombs bursting in air" was just awful and disconnected. it sounded like he was just trying to make the weirdest sounds possible in alot of parts, not really soloing on the song at all.

were on the same page dark shadow.

The point that Jimi was getting across (IMHO) was that if you closed your eyes and imagined what the "rockets red glare" and, "bombs burstin in air" sounded like. It wasn't really a solo as what is defined in the standard text today, but a mental painting using bare essentials Guitar, Wah, Fuzz, and Univibe (I believe).

Remember this was 1969 and Jimi was the "Pink Floyd" of sound effects at that time.

Artistically I think Jimi's "Star Spangled Banner" was dead-on. It may have been crap guitar playing but the guy sure knew how to get a point across..."the static in the air" of the time...a new anthem for a new America...

Re: Anyone remember this??

Anyone who can say that that was a terrible performance isn't looking at it the right way. Those weren't "solo's" inbetween the lines of the song. He was using the guitar to coax out the sounds of bombs, airplanes, machine guns, screaming etc. It was to make a point, about the Vietnam War and war in general. Personally, listening to this the first time last summer when I started playing guitar was more of an inspiration then any Van Halen song. Jimi was the original guitar god ;)

Re: Anyone remember this??

Jimi was "DA MAN!"

I confess that sometimes I find this tune difficult to listen to...but that is usually because I'm listening to it as a SONG instead of the creative piece of art that it is.

Jimi was applying classical arranging styles to the guitar. As said before, he created a soundscape depicting the imagery of the song.

Re: Anyone remember this??

I havent heard that in quite some time. I need to bust out my cds and give them all a listen again.

Thanks for the memories (whoever posted it.....i'm onto the machine gun vid now....     )

cool!!! Who is he???

He's originally from Holland and has a brother who plays drums. Ironically, when they started playing rock music he was taking drum lessons and his brother played guitar. Soon after that they switched instruments. He's very well-known for his tapping technique, which though he did not invent he certainly took to a new level.

He died about 15 years ago in a plane crash and now plays slide guitar for the Allman Brothers Band. Be on the lookout for his follow-up to his band's great roots bluegrass album "Lateralus."

Ahhh, my brothers...sometimes I get caught up in acquiring that lastest piece of gear, the lastest signature model guitar, pedal, pickup, etc., only to re-visit my past and realize that my original inspiration for playing guitar (Mr. Hendrix) didn't have any of this and his music is still as strong today as it was over 30 yrs ago. What would he have done with today's technology is one of the great questions of the music world. I miss him more than anyother musician that has left an imprint on me.

But he did have all that. He wasn't using anything that was vintage at the time and there weren't any signature models, but he was very into new sounds and new technology. He used a fuzz, an octavia, a univibe, a wah...

Also I'm quite sure the amp he played through was modded in some way.

Let me clarify my comment, he didn't have any of the current technology being used today (line 6, digital delays, noise gates etc. although chours and flange was pretty much an effect found in the studios at that time.). A note of interest is that in a conversation with a tech (I believe that it was Scott I spoke with) at Seymour Duncan, it was mentioned that Seymour actually did wind a pickup for Jimi, but I haven't found any documentation to back that up but it would be interesting to know.

Amps I don't think were modded. He was using Plexis at woodstock and before that he used Sunns and Fender (either bandmasters or showmans I think). The fuzz I believe was modded.

Re: Anyone remember this??

You have to be able to reference it to the time period. Those "noises" were revolutionary. Not to mention the fact that many had a problem with him doing that to The Star Spangled Banner. Kind of like when the Sex Pistols tore up God Save The Queen. Nobody thought about making love to a guitar like that before Jimi came along. Love him or hate him, much of the music or guitar playing that we listen to today would not be the same without him--Jazz, rock, pop, etc.
