Anyone replaced pups in an SG?

Hi I want to replace the stock pups in my Gibson SG and was wandering if anyone here has had any experience with this? What sounds for a general rock tone?
I've been thinking DD, JB and C5 so far.

By the way, i suppose we forum members are starting to get tired of answering all the same questions over and over again, (atlast i am), so why don't you do a search on "what pickups for me" or something....

Im sure that'll give you alot more info than you would get on this thread.

I did it to an SG a while back.

I put a JB in the bridge & a Seth lover in the neck (both nickel covered)

It sounded really good ( I'll see if I can find an mp3 somewhere!)

Erland is right. We've done this a few times, but for what it's worth I would consider either a pair of '59's (Lew's fav) or a pair of Seth Lovers (my favorite). Both sound great and really bring the guitar to life. Great for blues, rock, & distortion.

No offense to you or Erland, but I think he's wrong. ;)

I view the forum as a casual gathering place to chat about pickups and guitars and stuff. Not an institute of guitar tech. If you don't feel like answering . . . don't.

Let one of the newbies have a shot at giving some of their knowledge back. ;)

Its a good system.

Don't sweat it, tjtheguitarist. The search function is useful, but it never seems to give you the perfect answer. It sould atleast give you an idea for a more specific question.
You'll learn real quick that it is generally best to describe what type of sound you are looking for.

As for you forum veterans, given teh depth of the existing threads, if every person who had a question refered to the search function for an answer, we wouldn't have anything to talk about! ;) Seriously, how ofton does an original thread come along in teh pickup lounge? Once every couple days? ;)

My apologizes. I should have been clearer. On one hand you get tired of answering the same questions, but then again, we've all been newbies and need to have info. Sometimes guiding a newcomer to search for an old thread canbe more helpful than giving a quick answer. Most of our older or archived threads have more detailed info.

BTW. Tjtheguitarist- Welcome to the Forum. Didn't mean to be rude (they have the heat cranking here where I'm working and it starts to wear on you after a while....too many menopausal women here :laugh2: ). Enjoy the forum and, all questions are valid.

DD. Well really anything but an alnico II. They sound like **** in an SG, anything with an alnico II magnet. Alnico 5's sound fine, but I really loved the sound of my Super Distortion (ceramic) in my SG.

I've had a JB and a DD in my SG (wow, did I just rhyme...) and they both do fine.

A lot of people could also be asking, in part, because they want to actually interact with another person. We ARE social animals afterall.

But the Custom, C5, and CC all work well in an SG. The 59, I have oft heard, is perfect for the neck. (boomy in a LP, but where the SG will have less bass, it's perfect)

You sure the Custom Custom would sound like **** in an SG? If this were true, why does Gibson use alnico 2 humbuckers in their SGs?

I originally stuck a 59n and a C5 in my SG, but have since changed the 59 to a Jazz Model, which I like MUCH better. I tend to play a little more modern sounding stuff though, so the Jazz lends itself to that better. Unless you want to do a lot of "chugga chugga" stuff, the 59 is good, especially for fat bluesy leads. For the bridge, the C5 is good, especially for a more 'vintage' sound. Apparently (I don't know from personal experience) the custom (the C5 with a ceramic magnet instead of Alnico 5) will fatten up the bridge spot even more if you want a bit more kick. Granted, if you want an even more old school sound, a seth or a 59 would be better in the bridge, but I personally like a little bit more juice back there.

I beg to disagree!

Antiquity humbuckers, which are Alnico II, are extremely detailed, complex and soulful in my '66 SG Standard. Of course, I may be biased...

The '59 is my favorite humbucker for an SG, but my favorite pickup overall for an SG is an SD Phat Cat. It makes my SG sound like an old SG Junior.

anyways TJ if you want a good rock tone, JB in the bridge is good but JBs are pretty high output, depending on what kind of rock your talking about.. maybe too high.

i never tried the seth or custom pickups but i know the 59 bridge is also pretty good for solid rock tones (i couldnt stop playing AC/DC riffs when i was trying the 59b out :P)
