Re: Anyone thinking of checking this out when it's released?

I could build a Warmoth replica for half that.
...and your Warmoth would be worth the same in twenty years that it's worth now; dirt.
There's more to a guitar than the components. The name on the headstock means alot to folks. Fender's gone a long way to NOT going insane like Gibson has. Where Gibson has severed low-end offerings Fender has gone out of their way to make affordable instruments available. And with the QC some of the MIM instruments rival the MIAs.
But building a guitar means you're married to the depreciation. A Warmoth Strat never resells what was paid for it. And while dereciation exists for other guitars as well after a certain point in time the price will increase because they will become "vintage".
Meanwhile the Warmoth is just getting "old."

haha ... I'm with Joneser on this one ... EJ's specs are darn near perfect .. let me ask you, which would YOU buy, an Eric Clapton or this one?
I GUARANTEE that lots of lawyers' and doctors' sons will be lining up to get one
I own a first-year Clapton. I am not a doctor or lawyer. I bought it in my last year of college...not exactly a time of financial excess....
To me the EJ Strats look like a very well thought out instrument. EJ's a cat that has done his homework when it comes to tone. I think it's kinda cool to have Fender be insterested enough in it to put something together to his exacting specs.
If they were just throwing his name on a Reissue then sure....I'd call it a con.
But there's enough there to merit it being a high-end guitar. Whether $1600 worth is a totally different matter. Some folks will find the value in it without a problem. Others won't. I know I personally won't; it's more than I'd probably spend for any guitar no matter what my financial situation was.
