Anyone tried plugging a Bad Monkey into a PA?

Re: Anyone tried plugging a Bad Monkey into a PA?

Thanks, I appreciate it. :) There is a thread on TDPRI that has a few people saying it sounds pretty good so I was just wondering if anyone here had any experience, let me know how it goes.

Nope. I tried it with a DS-2 once though. It sounded like six day old pickled arseholes being shoveled into a steam-powered robotic hornet. And not in a good way.

Ha! I love my DS-2 but it's not meant to be plugged into a PA. :D

Actually, the Bad Monkey has a special output to plug directly to the PA. I have had to do this before (on live TV) and it wasn't too bad.

Yeah, thats what I am talking about. Most distortion pedals won't sound good straight into a PA because they are not designed for that. I don't know exactly how those pedals that can go into PAs work but it seems like they push the mids and treble out a bit while rounding out the tone so it isn't cutting through the PA. I played a small gig with a Tech 21 GT2 and I was happy with the way I sounded. Even got a couple compliments. :)

I didn't know that had a "PA out"...that changes things a little but as a general rule dirt boxes direct are rather terrible.

Tech 21 however is one of the exceptions to that "rule" as they are designed around running direct.

Sorry if I came off as a dick.

Are there any other companies that do what Tech 21 does besides AMT? Just curious. I had a friend who I saw play live who had a massive pedalboard into a PA system and he sounded pretty good. Ever since I have been fascinated by those small rigs hehe. I won't give up my Mesa anytime soon but it is just something that constantly keeps me entertained. :)

There are several things out there that are built for going direct but it's not the same as playing through an amp...never will be.

That's not to say you can't get good results from it but I'm never happy with those types of set ups.

It doesn't have any low pass filter and you need one. Normally your guitar speaker is one.

I tried an ART direct box with a tube in its circuitry between my board and a PA and never could get it to work right. I looked on their website and no longer see that particular unit.

Re: Anyone tried plugging a Bad Monkey into a PA?

Tried it -- man... it would work in a serious pinch, but I wouldn't recommend it. It sounded very thin and kind of sterile and lifeless, and the dirt sounded like clipping even though the levels were fine. Kind of awful really. The only use I could see for that PA output being useful for balancing a signal, much like a preamp, but otherwise I wouldn't do that again by choice :p

Ok, thanks. :D
