Anyone try a dimarzio dominion?

Re: Anyone try a dimarzio dominion?

I just was surprised with the 59s thinking that Lamb of God sound coming from them. Breeds and Invaders I can see. 59's for that to me would sound mushy with all that gain.

Mesa Boogie MKIV and mushy don't go together.

Re: Anyone try a dimarzio dominion?

Yes, I'd describe them as stiff but I happen to like stiff, tight pickups so it's exactly what I wanted. I also happen to adore the Aldrich so if that pickup wasn't for you I'd maybe reconsider. The good news is Dimarzio does have the return policy so if you're trading for a Breed you could always swap the Dominion for a new Breed to replace the Breed you got rid of (if you sold it anyway).

Are they as stiff as a Duncan Distortion?

Re: Anyone try a dimarzio dominion?

hey i could live with this!:):thanks:

No worries. They are awesome. I consider the Tone Zone to be amazing in Alder, but just too muddy in the basswood guitar I tried it in (without mods). The Dominion bridge in basswood is just perfect.

Re: Anyone try a dimarzio dominion?

I'm a dumbass too, sold two of them and what a mistake. Been regretting it ever since.

hey dont feel bad at least you sold a pup you can get easily again, try replacing the dimarzio axis set! they go for $300 on eaby WHEN and IF they are even available!:banghead:

Lol... I bought that A8 version from you and miss it. The C8 version I had second was almost as cool, but that A8 for me was it. I just didn't know it then haha.

I will admit though that the C8 had better cleans and was a bit clearer and actually had better dynamics. So much for Ceramics being sterile hey?

Yeah, but the IM kinda teases you. "Sure.....Im readily available, but Im also about $200. How's that for you, bucko?"

Re: Anyone try a dimarzio dominion?

Yea, 180-200 is just waaaay too much for me to spend. But I'll gladly fork over 100, maybe 120, maybe.

Re: Anyone try a dimarzio dominion?

Excellent review man, and pretty much spot on with my experience. Glad to see I'm not the only one who didn't overly dig the clean tone from the Dominion Bridge alone but enjoyed it in conjunction with the Dominion Neck. I really need to wire in a push/pull so I can split them.

Re: Anyone try a dimarzio dominion?

LOL, you guys are making me feel bad that my IM is in a box right now waiting for me to finish my explorer.

I popped in a keeper and tried an A8, maybe the different size and the keeper bar change it a little, but I didn't like it near as much as with the ceramic. I tried a big ceramic in it too, THAT was awesome for brut, but not near as dynamic, too much of a good thing, went back to the stock magnet.

Split with the neck is very cool, as is both full series.

IM and an explorer is <3.

Re: Anyone try a dimarzio dominion?

Nice review. Just don't let Blueman hear you talking about playing blues with a ceramic pickup! He'll get the pitchforks & torches out and lead the angry mod to your house.

I read through some of your other stuff, also. I did the exact same thing with the IBZ V7/V8 stocks a long time ago when I couldn't yet afford to replace them. You're right, BOTH pickups are far more usable just by switching the mags between the two. What were they thinking?

Re: Anyone try a dimarzio dominion?

Thanks, I did say heavy blues though! Parallel neck is a beautiful sound for bluesy playing especially. ;)

Yeah I know, who know's what Ibanez have been thinking in that respect. The Vs are actually pretty awesome pickups with the mags swapped. Perfectly usable stockies.

Really? I play blues on the SH5 all the time, sounds the same as if i am using a seth PAF but only more anger, bigger.

Re: Anyone try a dimarzio dominion?

I'm a bit interested in the Dominion also. So far I've had the Crunch Lab, X2N, Super Distortion, Tone Zone, Air Zone, and the Breed.

Crunch Lab, I don't really remember what it sounded like, but it was bassier than the X2N, and had less mids and treble.

The X2N doesn't sound good with an Eminence Man O War speaker

Super Distortion has a lot of output, it just sounds like hot distortion. Maybe it's the amp (Peavey Bandit) that I'm using

Air Zone sounds awesome tonewise, nice and fat, but not a lot of output

Breed is nice and fat, but more in the mids than in the bass. It has more output than the Air Zone but still not enough for me

The Tone Zone is supposed to be a more output version of the Air Zone, but sounds to me not as fat or as much output. I don't know why

Re: Anyone try a dimarzio dominion?

^The Dominion doesn't have much more output than the Breed. It is much tighter and more focused with less tubby low mids and a faster, leaner, more immediate bass response. It's not a bassy pickup, like the DiMarzio site suggests. It's also got some top-end rasp but not as much high mids as, say, a Duncan JB. It's also got a pretty generous dose of the typical DiMarzio "awwww" mids. I'd describe it as mix of some elements of the EMG 81 (fast and tight right on the edge of thin), JB (middy, cutting and very close to the same output level), and Duncan Distortion (raspy and edgy) but with the unmistakable DiMarzio voicing to the mids.

It's is a pickup I'd recommend if you're looking for something to nail that kind of dry slightly thin and undergained Lamb of God tone. It can be dialed in for other more juicy saturated tone, though, but for that, I'd look into something else first, TBH.

Love the Breed, thick and juicy. I think Breed I think AIC type tones
