Anyone use a les paul type for hair metal?

Re: Anyone use a les paul type for hair metal?

DiMarzio Super Distortion in an LP is Detroit Rock City-city, so about as 70's hair metal as it can get. JB will also work in a rosewood-keyed Gibson if it has to come from SD.

Re: Anyone use a les paul type for hair metal?

Slight bump....Let's not forget Tom Keifer from Cinderella as well!

He was mentioned already.

I remember in a GPFTPM article he was a collector of Les Pauls. I wonder how he made out, and if he hung onto a bunch from the 80s.

Re: Anyone use a les paul type for hair metal?

How about Doug Aldrich... I reckon he might know a thing or two about rocking a Les Paul, doesn't he?

Although to be really honest with you, I actually prefer his old superstrat antics. I couldn't care less about the topic of pigeonholing so excuse me ignoring the question whether he's hair metal enuff.

Re: Anyone use a les paul type for hair metal?

Seriously? They are not classic metal or thrash.

No, they are definitely not metal or thrash - for lack of a better term - "hard rock"/rock n' roll, a real mixture of styles. To me, they were a slightly amped up version of the stones, but not hair metal - that's poison, Ratt, Dokken, Cinderella, Warrant, etc. - G N' R was nothing like these bands and they were at the pinnacle of their careers in terms of popularity during the early 90's, unlike the "hair metal" bands, G N'R remained popular after nirvana came out, while pretty much all of the hair metal bands died out.

Re: Anyone use a les paul type for hair metal?

i don't really think Slash/G N' R is "hair metal"

They deff tried to look like hair metal in their early dayz.
Also, keep in mind, Slash started out with BC Rich Mockingbirds (much more hair metal than a Les Paul)

Oh my, where would GIBBY be today if Slash hadnt resurrected their coolness factor? ...at best, they'd be a half-forgotten firm, and their two flagship models would be a maple board Norlin-reissue custom w/ EMGs and a standard with a Floyd. Really, imagine for a sec a Gibson that hung on into the 2k-teens on Wylde and Lifeson endorsements. Total alternate reality!!

First off, Slayer wore more makeup than G N' R ever did from the beginning through "Hell Awaits" and I'm pretty sure Slayer is not hair metal. Sorry, a B.C. Rich Mockingbird doesn't make me think of hair metal - it makes me think of Dave Mustaine in the early days when he played that 10 string rich bich - and Mustaine is probably the antithesis of hair metal. Yes, everybody has seen the old famous pic of Axl with his face all dolled up, it was included in the Use your Illusion booklet. I still don't see how you could put G N' R in the same category as Poison. And, by the time G N' R reached any significant level of popularity - the makeup was and had been long gone for quite awhile. Also, I never heard Slash or Izzy execute any tap solos, and even though Slash occasionally used the BC Rich with the Floyd Rose, he didn't sound like complete **** the way CC DeVille did.

Re: Anyone use a les paul type for hair metal?

Hmmm… Slayer doing makeup. Was it more glam or more Halloween costume?

Re: Anyone use a les paul type for hair metal?

Cinderella are more hard rock and blues based than G&R and they get lumped up in the Hair Band catagory. Jeff doesn't do any tapping

I couldn't believe it at first, but look at the pics in the liner notes from SNM and HELL AWAITS - they definitely wore makeup. I've heard KK address the issue in an interview - he basically said that the fans told them they didn't need to wear it - so they ditched it.

Early Pantera is equally scary

You're missing what i am trying to say mate.

I'm just stating the blatantly obvious : GNR, like all the bands of that time, messed around with the Hair Metal/Poodle Rock IMAGE/LOOK !

Poison & G'n'R are diff genres? Lolwhut?! ....and i suppose that makes Skid Row rap & Dokken R'n'B? Honestly, seems like you're just subconsciously trying to separate bands you like and dislike into different styles, instead of the usual "good hairmetal/ymmv" & "bad hairmetal/imho" (btw, skid row/ poison > gnr for me)

As to Mustaine, that bloke spent the 80s toeing the line between hairmetal and speed metal. Google some pics, listen to some songs.

when you put it like that - I agree; if you look at pics of them from the 80's - it looks like the 80's. I guess I just hate when G N' R is referred to as "hair metal" because I think the music is better.

No, Poison and G N' R should never be mentioned in the same category. You are entitled to your opinion, but I can't believe that you actually prefer skid row and poison over G N' R. As far as Mustaine goes, he was never hair metal - he was thrash - Seriously, find me just one picture of Mustaine wearing makeup. Don't tell me to google pics and listen to some songs, since I have every official megadeth release since the beginning and probably 90% of the video/audio bootlegs out there. Plus, all I said was that I think of him when I think B.C. Rich

Geoff Watson of Night Ranger (beeyatch!)

Worse mistake of my life was getting a stock 79 Les Paul in 1981. NOT the ideal weapon of choice for that decade.

that on the other hand, would classify as hairmetal :)
