Anyone use a Marshall JTM45?

Intersting beast! 30 watts, tube Rct. How did/does it sound with pedals? Do you need to use a pedal in the front end to get it heavy?
Thanks!

Re: Anyone use a Marshall JTM45?

I've played the re-issues in the past and I have played an original 65 block logo with NOS Kt66's before.

The block logo 65 is still the best sounding amp I've ever played. Period. It ruined the re-issues for me, so I don't have one at present.

They are a great amp for blues playing and/or classic rock. The re-issues can really be brought to another level with some quality tubes and few other tweeks. They really respond to picking dynamics well. They are more a feel amp, rather than a knob twiddling amp.

Turned up, they can get pretty dirty in bluesy way, but for really heavy stuff, you will need a good pedal.

Backed off, and it's a big, spacious, clean.

Re: Anyone use a Marshall JTM45?

I have a Celtic Edana. It's a JTM-45 with higher grade parts than the current production batch. You need a pedal to get heavy. Best blues amp ever made PERIOD. Just wish I could play well enough to make it sound as good as Angus does.

Re: Anyone use a Marshall JTM45?

I own a 60's JTM-45, a reissue (Modified with components to be similar to the original), a Ceriatone, and an Edana.

Edana is the best of the four beast.

You should jump the channels to blend the tone and drive one of them (I boost the normal channel) with a boost when you want that extra grit.

Re: Anyone use a Marshall JTM45?

Isn't it what YJM frequently uses, no? they are non master volume right?

Re: Anyone use a Marshall JTM45?

No, YM uses later 1987 heads (mostly metal fronts as far as I know) and no the JTM-45 is a non master amp.
Hmm strange I've read that he uses vintage stuff, at least in the studio. But JTM-45 DOES NOT have master volume right? You said "no the JTM-45 is a non master" so .... ?

no master volume on the JTM nope..

I have a JTM-45 and thinking of swapping the tubes for KT66.. but so far i just simply love this thing, for everything and everything it is my main amp and even sold the others cuz i ended up never using them anymore... to me it does need a few pedals to get it sounding as hard and heavy as i want it too, then agian im a pedal freak.. yet i dont use that many in front of it... but alone it can sound pretty killer with a les paul if you crank it. With my strat, wich is my main guitar, and a few selected pedals this thing rocks and i can go from folk to full on metal tones.. (dont expect no triple rectifier mega distortion thing comming out of this though, itll do more of a hard rock thing... but i just push it harder to get "metalish" :P) its a rather glassy, clean and articulate amp that is more responsif to your playing style than any amp ive tried. My favorite to date amp period.

Re: Anyone use a Marshall JTM45?

it is a non master volume amp. If you need something to compare it to when it comes to grit, it would probably be the Fender Tweed Bassman. Pretty much the same circuit except with different tubes. It really shines through if you are looking for that Hendrix clean tone and up to AC/DC crunch. great amps, however I prefer the ole tweeds.

Well, thay are vintage heads...from the late 60's and early 70's, the model number of the head is 1987...a 1987 is a 50 watt Plexi and a 1959 is a 100 watt plexi. And the JTM-45 does not have a master volume.

Re: Anyone use a Marshall JTM45?

How is the volume, compared to the 1987x? Does it roar as soon as you increment the volume to 1/2? :D

I am looking for a pedal-friendly amp and the JTM45 is a contender, I think.

A real JTM-45 (and most good clones) don't have the same roar of a post 1972 Plexi or the Plexi reissues, those amps have a volume control that acts almost like an off/on switch! The JTM-45's (and again, most clones) have a volume control that ismuch more even as you turn the knob up.

In my opinion almost all Marshalls are good amps for pedals but it does depend on the pedal and what results you are looking for, it also depends GREATLY on the speaker(s) you are using if the pedal in question is an overdrive/boost/distortion/fuzz pedal.

Yes, my 1987x is like that... off.... ON!!!! :smokin: I love it with my attenuator but I'd like to get some versatility with another amp, and the JTM head would look great on top of my 1987x :bigok:

I only use a plexitone and a Maxon chorus. Sometimes I use a wah and I plan to get a nice analog delay. I should have said 'headroom' instead of 'pedal-friendly'.

Speakers? Greenbacks, of course :D

Well, a JTM-45 is less power than a 1987 as a JTM-45 (and a correct clone) is only about 30-35 watts BUT they do have a better clean tone IMO...not sure how one would work out next to a 1987 when compared head to head looking for headroom. I would say if you were to run the Plexitone with the 1987x and attenuate it down a bit and AB'd with the JTM-45 you'd have a load of KILLER britt tone both clean and dirty. Just keep in mind, it is a 30 watt amp and it is a Marshall...it is gonna distort.

On the speaker front I really like Greenbacks if Im gonna use a Marshall but a lot of guys really like a pair of Celestion Blues with a JTM-45 in a combo set up.

Re: Anyone use a Marshall JTM45?

My first great amp was an original JTM45. I sold it to buy a master volume Marshall. :smack:

I'm waiting for Celtic to start exporting Edanas to the UK. :fingersx:

what are these Edanas people talk about?

Re: Anyone use a Marshall JTM45?

Scott_F builds custom amps, and the Edana is his take on the JTM-45 with a few small differences. If I'm not mistaken, it has higher wattage then the reissues and old ones (45 watts instead of 30) and has a switch in the back that changes a few values somewhere in the tone stack to make it a bit more Plexi-like. However I wouldn't go completely off my word and I'd wait for Scott or a Celtic owner to chime in.
