Anyone use Texas Heats?

Re: Anyone use Texas Heats?

I run a pair of Texas Heats along with a pair of Swamp Thang in one of my 4x12s in an X pattern. I've never heard the THs by themselves, but I do know that they sound great with STs. One thing I have noticed, though, that speaker combo sounds better with 6L6s than they do with EL34s. I recently switched to EL34s (New Sensor Svetlana) in my Triple Rec, along with Sovtek 5AR4/GZ34 rectifier tubes, and found this out.

Re: Anyone use Texas Heats?

I have the old EVM speaker in it. Those early ones with a huge sound. It sounds great for dirty stuff but I want to try and get some more warmth from the cleans.

Re: Anyone use Texas Heats?

Gibson175 suggested a pair of these for my Ampeg, so I will be watching this thread as well. Thanks for asking, Andrew.

Re: Anyone use Texas Heats?

I have an old Mesa halfback with a C90 in the top and a EVM12L in the bottom. My Fender Dual Showman cab has a Texas Heat and a Cannabis Rex.

Off the top of my head, I'd say that would be a great speaker for you to try, but I can't honestly say as I've not compared the two side by side. I can have a definite answer for you this weekend along with a general comparison.

Here's the You Tube clip that made me want to get the Texas Heat/Swamp Thang combo. I know, not exactly what you're looking at, but it does go back and forth between the two speaker types, so you'll be able to heat the TH by it's self.

Re: Anyone use Texas Heats?

Great speaker. More versatile than the name would imply. Powerful, tight low end with just the right amount of bass. Crystal clear highs that are never harsh. It's not a scooped speaker. The mid range is rather balanced except for some emphasis in the upper mids which is sweet and allows it to cut through smoothly. It has kind of a British flavor though it's a part of the Patriot series. Clean sounds are spectacular. It has a rather tight yet responsive feel that's kind of lively under your fingers, so it has a lot of dynamics but doesn't force you to coax it to much. I have used it with a Blues Junior, Marshall DSL50, Mesa Boogie Electra Dyne, and Bogner Shiva, and it sounded great with every amp I put through it. I don't think there is a better speaker that you can put in a Blues Junior, and I have tried many. It has a healthy low end but not too bassy. However, it will thump a bit much if you let the bass get out of control... but then some people like a ton of low end. It's a great speaker for American and British voiced amps.

Re: Anyone use Texas Heats?

Maybe try the "new" Black Shadow, the C90 aka the rebadged UK Celestion Classic Lead 80 (possibly tweaked to mesa spec, possibly just a rumour - definitely labelled CL80 on side though)... it's the only speaker Mesa sells today except for the V30, and it's quite awesome
