I'm about to drop a pair into an Edana. Anyone used them yet? I love the other tubes that factory is cranking out.

Re: Anyone used one of the new Tung Sol KT66?

They look startlingly similar to the new production Sovtek KT-66 tubes.

I currently have the sovteks in my Edana, but am planning to put the original groovetubes back in for the moment.

The bases look very similar, but the tube envelopes are different. That must mean that they are indeed different enough. Let me know what you think of the Tung Sols. I may order a pair depending on your review.

Re: Anyone used one of the new Tung Sol KT66?

From Dr. Z amps posted by Mike himself...the man is a tube amp guru and I would trust this info!

"It has been brought to my attention from Igor Boros, that the new TS KT-66 aren't really KT-66's at all and the metal base like a 6550 will short the bias voltage if the tube clamp touches them.

Thanks Igor for the heads up.

Pin 1 is tied to the metal base.

Real KT-66 do not have a metal base.
This tube looks like a combination of a KT-88 inners, and the outer design of a 6550.

That makes perfect sense! My old Magnavox and RCA 6550s look just like those but a bit taller.

Man Mike and Igor know their stuff!

Glad to know they haven't sent me the Paypal requst for funds yet. :)

I'm having trouble finding the Groove Tubes KT66HP. I really like those tubes. Seem backordered everywhere.

Re: Anyone used one of the new Tung Sol KT66?

I have heard nothing but good about the Shuguang take on them as well as their KT88 offerings. They really seem to be putting out some quality stuff right now. Their EL34 and 6l6 offerings are among the best sounding new tubes I have heard,

Re: Anyone used one of the new Tung Sol KT66?

that would make me dance a jig, but $200+ a pair doesnt

ive had problems getting a set of the gtkt66hp's lately too, they dont even list em on the website any more

Re: Anyone used one of the new Tung Sol KT66?

I"m going to have to go Chinese if they don't show up soon!

Re: Anyone used one of the new Tung Sol KT66?

You gotta talk to the Tube Tramp... He has all the goodies.

Re: Anyone used one of the new Tung Sol KT66?

Terry Kilgore aka Tube Tramp or Sargeant Overdrive on various vintage amp forums. Terry sells tubes, amazing variety of NOS and new, he is an amazing guitar player with a superb ear, so he can really help one dial in an amp to their specific tonal likings. He has taught me more about vintage tone than any other person, so I like to give him a plug. Well worth shooting a note to. Great guy, great prices and all the rest.

I rechecked a web site and found this info...

Genalex (GEC) KT66 Grey Bottle NOS/NIB 1950s
Outstanding quality of sound. The best dynamics for any 6L6 amp. Huge sound and incredible detail. Very Rare $350 each NOS 1960s $300/matched pair

And for the fakes...

Saratov KT66The Saratov KT66 is a high quality Russian made tube. This tube is well balanced from top to bottom, and has a smooth overdrive that makes it a great choice for a classic tone. It is acceptable to use in many 6L6 tube amps, but not all.
RU-KT66$54.95 Price is for a matched pair.

Shuguang KT66This new Chinese KT66 is very similar to the one used in the Marshall reissue JTM 45. These tubes need to be biased hot to sound their best. You can learn more about them in our 6L6 tube review.
SH-KT66$43.95 Price is for a matched pair.

Sovtek KT66From our review of this tube: "Everything you read in the review of the Sovtek 6L6WXT+ tube holds true for this tube..." more
SO-KT66$43.95 Price is for a matched pair.

Tung-Sol KT66This new production Tung-Sol KT66 tube is manufactured at the New Sensor Corp. owned Xpo-Pul factory (also known as Reflektor) in Saratov, Russia.
TS-KT66$67.95 Price is for a Matched Pair.

Re: Anyone used one of the new Tung Sol KT66?

Well, not available yet, but thanks for the info. I just sent Bobbo an email.

Re: Anyone used one of the new Tung Sol KT66?

True obsession: spending hours trying to find the perfect tube for an amp. Is it really that complicated? :)

I want to try every tube out there. I want to get in on anything new to see. I read about that new EF86 from JJ. God, would someone make a great new production EF86? I will buy a bunch! I'm not asking too much, am I?

It looks like those Saratovs are the same glass as the GT KT66HP. I might have to try some of those as well.
