Anyone Using Vox Tonelab SE Live?

Either direct to PA or into an Amp?

I'm really looking to see if anyone is using there Tonelab(EDIT: GT-8 or XTLive) direct into a PA?

I'm considering possibly getting something similar and just using it direct to PA, Much more convienient and less time consuming setting up at a gig (keep in mind I own the PA and such and i'm the one setting that up ON TOP of setting up my amp and effect pedals and Guitar and Mics etc..)
So it'd be nice to be able to plug the tonelab into the Desk,take out my guitar,plug it into the tonelab, then Play!

I've asked about Multi-fx into PA for Live use before,mainly the GT-8 and Pod XTLive, but i've heard alot aout these moddlers not having the same "Feel" and resposivness and reactions as a tube amp(which they obviously wouldn't 100%)
But does the Tonelab get any closer to these feels?

I play in a cover band, mostly classic rock , so looking for something to do tones along those lines..

Opinions are greatly appreciated!

Even from those again who use the boss or Line 6 moddlers direct to PA live!

Yes, I use a Tonelab live and plug it directly into a PA. I would give this approach an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being excellent). The biggest plus to this approach is that you blend well when playing in a many part group (singers, keys, etc.). The Tonelab itself covers many sounds. I can find a nice clean sound and a nice dirty sound. The effects are very good too. FYI, I use my own powered monitor to hear myself versus trying to use PA monitors.

When I play out with my 4 person band (drums, lead & rythmn guitar, bass), I always use an amp. The Tonelab is not the tool for this setting.

I used an SE for over a year live, sounded excellent - I dialed in tones I've never been able to get with any amplifier. I ran mine into a peavey classic 50/50 stereo power amp (EL84 drivent) and then into an avatar 2x12 cabinet. The peavey was a very neutral sounding amp with plenty of clean headroom but it really warmed up the overall sound of the tonelab. The avatar with it's two celstions (V30/G12H30) probably colored the sound the most but I like the sound of these speakers so I was very pleased with the tone. I also ran the amp into a Mackie 15" two way PA speaker and it sounded damn good as well. I set up banks where no cabinet simulator was used when using the peavey/avatar combination and then another couple of banks were set up with cabinet simulation if I used the Mackie PA speaker - overall a great system. I didn't ever use the SE plugged directly in a board so I can't comment on how that would sound. The only reason I'm not using this system now is I don't need anything more than a 1x12 combo amp for the places I play - but if I were doing something which required more versatility or if I were recording I would be using the tonelab.

The singer/guitarist in my band uses a POD 2.0 into either his Valvestate combo or into the PA.

I personally don't like the sound at all. It sounds harsh and thin, with no 'guts' to it at all.

He loves it though, so what can I say

I'm also just going through posts on the Boss GT Central forums about the Boss GT-8.
I guess I could try buy one (tonelab or GT-8,Or possibly the XTL price depending) used from the states. That way if I'm not happy with it(and at least this way i'll get a first hand chance to try it out through my pa) then I can seel it for = or greater than I got it!


Please keep opinions coming though, theres greatly appreciated ad helpful!

I use a Boss GT-Pro into the PA. I havent noticed it not having the same feel as a tube amp, but I use it for all kinds of sounds, from classic to really twisted.

I remember having a similar conversation with you before :laugh2:
Do you use the Amp and Cab sims aswell (ie do you use the GT-Pros overdrives and Dist. etc.. aswell)

I use the cab and amp sims, no real amp- that would defeat the purpose of this thing- it is meant to be an easy all in one solution. problem is, these days, you pretty much have to buy it and keep it for awhile before any piece of gear 'clicks' with you and your needs. Before I settled on a GT-Pro, I bought a PODxt pro. for me, I need it rackmounted to be in my setup, so there are less choices.

Thats really what i'm after, an easy all-in-one solution that of course most importantly, Sounds Good.
I think you are right about having to realy buy it and spend weeks and months with it firstly though, it's been the case with anything i've bought, I don't think you can get even the remotest idea of what a product is all about by just fiddling with it for a few hours at a shop or at a friends house, You really gotta try it in you own setup.

May I ask how did you found the Pod Xt Pro?
I'm considering buying a Pod XT Live used from the states to try out for a while, at least if I don't like it I can sell it here for what i paid for it.

I liked the Pod, and I bought the upgrade model packs as well- all 3. It did sound good, but you do get about 70 different amps, many heavy sounding amps, that, quite frankly, sounded too 'same-y'. i mean, out of about 20 different amps, i heard maybe 2 different sounds. Very good sounds, but just 2. Also, the effects, whicle good, even great, are nowhere near as tweakable as the GT series. No pitch shifters or other weirdo effects. Try downloading the manual to both and reading what each can do. I found both to sound good, but the GT was a lot more variable, and if there was something you didn't like, it was easier to dial that out. The XT was more plug-n-play. Great basic sounds, probably what most guitarists need, but I wanted to mess with the sound a little more than it would allow.

Hiya:

I use the ToneLab SE live. I run it through the FX return of my old Boogie. Amp sims on, cab sims off. Mostly I use the blackface, tweed 4X10 & 12, & Recto amps. I have about 12 patches I use a lot. I have different patch sets for different guitars. Like it.

I've played it through the PA, but I still use the Boogie as a monitor. I turn on cab sims then, & EQ it on the board. I tried it without my own monitor, & didn't like it. I'm just not used to having my guitar sound buried in the mix, makes it hard for me to play.

So mincer, do you think that mabye the GT-8(or Pro) would be a much better long term investment than the Pod XTL? less plug n play but has the greater potential?


Dirt123 did you like the tone you got from the PA when you had the chance to hear it from out front?
I was planing on using a monitor either from the Desk or getting an active one and using an output from the MFX to it.

I like the idea of having the tube simulating a poweramp, but the SE is so expensive and the PodXT seems to do so much more. I'll let you know what the XT sounds like tomorrow, whether I buy it or not.

Over here they're both priced the same...

But i think I may be leaning either GT 8 or XTLive now

Here the PodXT is $299 USD and the tonelab SE is $450 USD. Maybe I should go ahead and get to sleep so time will go faster. I want my POD!

yeah, i think the GT has more potential than the POD due to its flexibility and the ability to have 2 amps at once (1 in each channel, or channel switching). The XT seems like there is a bigger user base out there, and Line6 does have a better connection with its customers, and a pretty big user group. I just got fed up with the lack of tweakability coming from using a Roland preamp (a GP-100), so the POD would annoy me that I came so close to a sound, but it just wasnt right.

GT-8 is more expensive. The Pod is the best for the money for me.

I have a question, the pod xt and xt live are the same software right?
