Anyone want to hear a Magnet Shootout??

Hey everyone!
Like most of you I need to understand the subtle differences in Magnets.
So I found a way to swap them out quick enough on one of my guitars to make a sample "Shootout" if you will to demonstrate the tonal characteristics of each.

I used a cheap "Jem" copy, 1 bridge humbucker reading 10.5 Kohms, and bypassed all tone/ volume pots, and switches.

So after a lot of quick edits I decided to post this as I haven't seen this done before.

It is comprised of 6 different riffs, (nothing special) and each magnet is put through the same riff all in the same order. A2-A3-A4-A5-A8-Cer.

I hope this sheds some light on some of the questions that people have towards the basic "tonalities" of different magnets, but more importantly, I would like others to join in and make some more comparison Vids!!!!
Thanks, enjoy:) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WloCr8VOGXU

Re: Anyone want to hear a Magnet Shootout??

Great thread! :yourock:

I liked the A2 magnet best somehow. Sorry, I can't contribute something to this thread, since I never swapped magnets.

Re: Anyone want to hear a Magnet Shootout??

Bows Graciously...:23:

Thanks, the funny thing is that I am actually a P-90 guy.
(Humbucker was the easiest to swap out mags at the time)

Re: Anyone want to hear a Magnet Shootout??

The only real change I'm noticing is that A8 and Ceramic seem slightly louder than the others.

Re: Anyone want to hear a Magnet Shootout??

i can hear most of the qualities described of each pickup, though a8's lows didn't sound as full as i'd expect in that shootout. good comparison though:fing2:

Re: Anyone want to hear a Magnet Shootout??

Pretty darn subtle except for the A8...I think I could get ten times the tonality change of the other grades by turning a knob on my amp. With all that said, the A2 sounds best to me.

Re: Anyone want to hear a Magnet Shootout??

they all some cool qualities...except the A3. just sounded dead in every one.

awesome thing though, thanks

Re: Anyone want to hear a Magnet Shootout??

i liked a5 and ceramic the best, although i think it would be better if you put the auidio on soundclick for download and had some beeps to sync to a countdown on a silent youtube vid. that way we can better sound quality and the benefit of knowing exactly what we're hearing at any given time

awesome that you did that man! i dont have the pateince at all!

yeah, I'll see what I can do to improve the next one.

Re: Anyone want to hear a Magnet Shootout??

Wow. The A2 really shined for me in that test. The A8 was second best and the A3 totally sucked.

Re: Anyone want to hear a Magnet Shootout??

Not really hearing much difference here either, except the obvious "dead" sound of the A3 and the loudness of the A8.
Cool thread idea though.

Re: Anyone want to hear a Magnet Shootout??

Excellent demo indeed! I could definately hear differences.

A2 - warm, fat.... nicest sounding for me, very balanced with sparkle.
A3 - Flat and weak.
A4 - neutral.. no character.
A5 - Although it seemed quiet? Balanced and brighter sounding, not as full as A2.
A8 - Loud in this test, more like an A5 with a volume boost
Ceramic - ? don't know what to say really.

My favs in order would be
A2, A5, A8, A4, A3 then ceramic.

Many thanks, VERY enlightening!

i'm betting a5 probably seemed quieter because of the apparent mid scoop: private:

and a3 sounds much cooler in the neck spot!!

I think the real sleeper in the test for me is the A4. I hear some very cool almost acoustic type tones there. It really intrigued me.

Nice job dude at least you are doing something vs. talking. I am starting to wonder how many people actually play versus just talk about it.

I have been doing a lot of mag swapping for kicks lately. I like the A2 and A8 mags the most in my 59 and CC but the 59 (w/A5) and CC (w/A2) always sounded good too...the A8...as demonstrated..just makes them louder.

Re: Anyone want to hear a Magnet Shootout??

I play lots of gigs but find recording an occasional necessary evil so maybe my perspective is a little different. I think that in a gigging situation it would make little difference to me which of those magnets I used. As far as an audience is concerned it would make no difference to them at all. I think this borders on an 'emperor's new clothes' situation.

Re: Anyone want to hear a Magnet Shootout??

I think it's harder to tell the effects of the magnets without some distortion. With clean tones there's a difference but it's less noticeable, to me anyway.

Re: Anyone want to hear a Magnet Shootout??

Nice! Thanks for your effort! I am really intrigued by the A8 magnet.. I'll install one very soon I guess.
