Anything better than 59n with Custom and 59/ Custom Hybrid?

Re: Anything better than 59n with Custom and 59/ Custom Hybrid?

The Hybrid is going into a Les Paul Doublecut, more for straight-up hard rock and lighter metal styles. Tuned to E-flat standard. I went with the Hybrid because it seemed to have a tighter bottom end more pronounced mids.

More pronounced mids than WHAT? What are you actually comparing it to to make this statement?

The hybrid (C/59) actually has very little mids. That's why it sounds so clear and articulate and bright, and chimey.

Than the Custom.

What does the PAF Joe compare to?
A PAF Pro but tighter and brighter.

Compared to a 59, it's more filled out but tighter.

Compared to the Jazz or Sentient it will give you upper-mid push.

Compared to a WLH it's brighter with more top-end.

The PAF Joe flutey and and a bit hotter than vintage. Perfect against a 59/C in a Les Paul, unless you like a weak or honky pickup in the neck position.

Than the Custom.

The Custom has way more mids than the C/59 hybrid. What you are hearing is the very strong tight bass and the almost extreme, piercing highs of the Custom due to the ceramic magnet which makes it seem like it has less mids.

Gregory- to be honest, I’m not a huge neck pickup user. I may even go for cheaper alternative in there, as it’s often drowned in fuzz.

Which makes the mids more pronounced in the Hybrid than in the Custom, as I said in my original post.

The A5 magnet combined with coil mismatch makes the 59/C an extremely scooped pickup. The Custom, not so much.

That's the reason why you get a pickup that works well with gain. The PAF Joe is one such pickup. If you're just a rhythm player and use heavy flubby fuzz then the neck isn't a good place to go, unless you go with a single coil or a weak humbucker that has single coil attributes (Full Shred Neck/Humbucker From Hell).

An A2, not because it's a "frowny faced" magnet where is an A5 is a "smiley faced" magnet malarkey, rather because it shifts the resonant peak downwards to emphasize the mids instead of the treble. Now if you stick an A2 in the 59/C hybrid, I'd go with the Sentient or weaker APH-1N if you want more emphasis in the midrange in the neck pickup as well.

Re: Anything better than 59n with Custom and 59/ Custom Hybrid?

I have read that a few guys use the Super 2 in the neck for stoner rock type stuff, and JD from the Sword had that in one guitar and a Pearly Gates neck in another.

The Super 2 is going to be way too hot for a 59/Custom.

I love the Sword but his live tone was only "meh". Which really surprised me. His coffin burst LP Custom with I'm guessing Shaw's or T's was his best sounding guitar.

Sorry, I meant the Super 2 with the Custom for the heavier stuff. I did consider an SH-6 neck at one point.

I'm thinking that a 59 in the neck of the Doublecut with the 59/C, as it's probably not going to see all that much use really. I should probably mention that it's 24-fret.

I remember being surprised that he was using a Metal Muff in one of the rig rundowns, less surprised that he changed it for a Bogner Ecstasy Red (I think).

With 24-fret you could go with a PAF Pro over a PAF Joe, but if you have the 59 on hand I would try that.

I think the Super 2 and SH-6N are even too hot for a Custom. SH-6N with an A4 could work, but it isn't something I would use. I prefer the SH-6N better as a bridge pickup (with an A5).

This was from May last year, idk what he's running now but he was still rocking the BIG crunch head then.

Re: Anything better than 59n with Custom and 59/ Custom Hybrid?

Take the A5 magnet from your 498t and put it in the 490r and install an A8 into the 498t. You will then essentially have a Custom 8 and '59 Neck set for $5. I did this to my LP Custom and I'm very very satisfied. Those pickups are never leaving that guitar. It's like a whole different set. I got the idea from here and its not forum folklore. It really works and its awesome. And if you decide not to I may interested in one or both sets.

24-fret would help a 59n sound better, pushing it toward the bridge a bit.
