Anyway of aging bobbins?

I have this hybrid that's made of an old cream bobbin and newer cream bobbin. As you can see, there's a slight difference color (you can really tell the difference in person). Is there anyway of aging the bobbin without having to paint it or dip it in coffee? Lol, I did a search and that's what I got.

I might end up putting painter's tape on the old bobbin and exposing it to sunlight. Hopefully it'll age properly within a couple of months. The cracked bobbin has a 6 year head start, though. :/

Re: Anyway of aging bobbins?

You could try diluting some iodine in alcohol and apply it with a q-tip. Kiwi light brown shoe polish.

Put cream bobbin toppers on both bobbins?

Re: Anyway of aging bobbins?

I think I may have some of that shoe polish. Do I need to delude it with water or something? I'm going to try it on a spare white cover I have.

The toppers seem like a good idea, but I already have the color(s) I want. I just want them to age evenly.

Just put a thin layer on the spare cover with a rag and let it sit overnight. Then wipe it off the next day and see if it stains enough for you

Re: Anyway of aging bobbins?

A buddy of mine soaked his single covers in coffee overnight and they looked great. Maybe you could q-tip some on there.

Re: Anyway of aging bobbins?

Well, I went ahead and tried "aging" a white cover. The polish only made it brownish. I was lucky enough to find a cream LP toggle cap in my parts drawer. I applied a light coat to it and immediately wiped it off. I repeated this process a couple of times to match the darker shade of cream.

Check it out:

It looks pretty damn good, IMO. The cap was actually a shade lighter than the new bobbin! A word of advice, watch out for surface scratches. The polish will make the scratch appear like burgundy in color.

Thanks for the tip, idsnowdog. Hopefully, this thread will help out other members or even guests. :friday:

Update: The deed is done. It took about 5-6 light coats to get the right shade. I used a threading needle to remove polish out of tight spots.

For now, she'll remain in a parts drawer until I can find a suitable 339 or 336 for her. :D

I forgot to post a pic of the end result.

What do you guys think? It looks good enough or it looks meh?

Re: Anyway of aging bobbins?

Looks good to me! Hope Larry Dimarzio doesn't read this thread......;)

Re: Anyway of aging bobbins?

Nice! I'm going to have to try that on my parchment PG+. Is the color change permanent?

Re: Anyway of aging bobbins?

I can't say for sure, since I've only had for a couple of days. Only time will tell honestly. Touching it with fingers won't rub any of it off though.

As for the PGP, it seems more white to me. I would try "aging" something with the same color as the PGP to see whether it'll be colored correctly. I'll try to post some pics of what happened to the white cover I tried "aging", but I need to go on a coffee run first, lol.

It was more burgundy brown than cream. Unless your PGP has aged to a very light cream, I wouldn't try without a test run first.

Re: Anyway of aging bobbins?

It's aged some, but it still looks white when placed in a cream Gibson ring. I'm going to try it out. If it does end up burgundy, then I'll just use it the way I've been using it upto now, under a nickel Duncan cover.

Sorry about the bad pic, I still need more coffee. :D

If the PGP looks like the second cover from the bottom you should be good to go. That's what my toggle cap looked like before I aged it.

Re: Anyway of aging bobbins?

It's somewhere between the 2nd from the bottom and third from the bottom. I't going to be a crap shoot, I think.

Re: Anyway of aging bobbins?

If I were you I'd buy this cap and age it to get an idea of what the PGP might look like.Off-white switch cap What kind of guitar is going into? If a double cream HB would make a world of a difference, I'd spend the $4 on the cap.

For me it will, I would love to put it in one of these. :cool2:

Re: Anyway of aging bobbins?

I plan on it going into a Lester. I might just keep it under a cover, to stay on the safe side.
