Are 6L6s Required for Surf?

When I thing surf music, I think big Fenders, Dick Dale's Showman, for example. Twin Reverbs. Super Reverb at the very least. Of course, I'm talking blond or blackface. When I think surf, I don't think tweed.

Assuming the volume requirements were lower, could a Deluxe Reverb do convincing surf music? What about a Princeton or Champ?

Discuss.

Re: Are 6L6s Required for Surf?

I think the general tone is from blondes onwards with plenty of clean headroom and spring reverb is a must... that said other clean amps while not typical could be used I think Hank Marvins tone wouldnt be too bad for surf and thats an AC30 + fender reverb.

Re: Are 6L6s Required for Surf?

a DRRI could MAYBE do it, but ideally you'd need some sort of external reverb unit. Apparently you can also put 6l6's in them, that'd help. Also JBL's are a big part of the tone

Re: Are 6L6s Required for Surf?

yes you can play surf music on smaller amps.
I have a twin and a princeton reverb II.
Only trouble you have to think about is how loud your drummer and the rest of your band are. Surf music usually has electric bass, and the drummers use sticks not brushes, so headroom is the key to getting that sound.
I like the PRII for surf sounds, but the twin is beyond compare. Big tubes cant be beaten.
A twin on 3 souund more like those recordings you know than a deluxe reverb on 6.
Also - those huge reverb tanks in twins and supers really so sound absolutely stellar!
In a perfect world, id say go for a 6l6 powered blackface style fender for surf music with the best reverb you can find. In short....that means a twin.
....but yeah, you can get sweet tones from smaller amps too, but like most gear choices, its a compromise.

My '65 Ampeg Reverberocket w/7591As is a killer surf machine - 18 watts of clean twangy goodness with cavernous reverb and swampy tremolo.

You can do it with a DRRI or PRRI with some speaker upgrades and tube swaps, but a Champ? No. The speaker isn't big enough to reproduce the extended freqs needed and you run out of headroom rather quickly.

Re: Are 6L6s Required for Surf?

I had an original Reverb -o - rocket back in the day. I loved that amp... Great cleans, but really not powerful enough for todays surf stuff. Rich I think the Showman or a Twin would do a great job. Very clean and very loud, but the guitar is almost important. A Jazzmaster, Stratocaster or a Telecaster would be my choice. The Strats with a good wang bar is essential. A Tele would have to have a Bigsby!

I don't think a Deluxe Reverb would really do it. I have one & once the volume gets to 3 or 4 it starts to break up.

Yeah right, it's the Bob and Doug action figures that pull it all together:biglaugh:

I used to get a great surf tone with a strat, laney lionheart, bright switch on, reverb cranked all the way...lush!

Depends on the version - mine is not 6V6-based, it's 7591As and has a SS rectifier so it caps out at around 18 watts vs the 12-15w of the previous versions. Couple that with an efficient speaker and it's still clean and loud enough for small clubs.

Re: Are 6L6s Required for Surf?

It was kind of a loaded question. I'm looking forward to augmenting my Marshall with a Fender with more headroom, and I'm trying to decide between a Deluxe-sized amp and a Super Reverb- or Vibrolux-sized one.

However, I've been listening to The Dillengers the last couple days. Rick Rosano gets a great sound out of non-traditional gear: Peavey Classic 20s (EL84s I believe) and for tremolo, a Keeley-modded Boss TR-2. Sacrilege! :biglaugh:

Awesome! I didn't even notice them until you said something. Except I'd hesitate to use the word "action" to describe them. ;)

Depending on the speaker, it's often the speaker falling apart (frequently referred to as "farting out"). It's the speaker rather than the amp that is most a problem. After that, probably looking at the rectifier, transformers and power supply as culprits. Not that I'd butcher a vintage model to fix it's problems. Might consider a different speaker or rectifier, particularly if the original speaker is dodgy/to preserve it for resale.

Depending on which era, some are stiffer/higher headroom than others, though it doesn't vary as much as some other lines (tweed bassman vs later models, even some passed off as reissues, etc).

Anyways, outside the Deluxe, it's really about finding an amp with enough volume and headroom for your situation. If you are micing and have monitors, you have a lot more options. I've heard plenty of surf where they used non-6L6 amps, particularly in the studio. 6V6, 7591A, KT66, even 6550 and KT88.

I'd say the guitar and reverb matter more than the amp. And in the amp, a fendery preamp and speaker more than the power section.

Howdy,

Rich S: You do realize that Twins are a bargain on the used market, right? Of course, they weigh in at 75-80 lbs! You might keep your eyes peeled for a Dual Showman head, too. Just my two cents. Good luck!

Re: Are 6L6s Required for Surf?

no, just a decent swell...preferably with a 10 second + period :smack:
