Re: Are all ceramic magnets bad sounding?

I mostly like alnico PAF-style tones but the SH-5 Duncan Custom is an excellent sounding ceramic pickup in my opinion. PAF on steroids is the right description - cleans are very usable.

Re: Are all ceramic magnets bad sounding?

Not all ceramics are bad sounding, the lil 59, lil jb, and bill lawrence l280s and l200s are all ceramics,

there are bad sounding and nice sounding ceramic and alnico pickups, so it depends on the designer

Ceramics magnets has its own favor and character,

Re: Are all ceramic magnets bad sounding?

IMHO, there can be Alnico 2 magnets pickups that can be harsh just as there can be ceramic magnet pickups that can be smooth. The Duncan Custom is one of the best pickups available and I have never looked at it as being harsh. The Steve Morse signature pickups are ceramic and they're not harsh at all.

+1 the stock phat cat bridge in the neck and pearly gates bridge set i had in my sg was one of the harshest setups i'd ever heard.

Re: Are all ceramic magnets bad sounding?

When you ask about "good and bad", it's all opinion, and that's influenced by the PU itself, the guitar, amp, and type of music. You're not going to get a lot of hard facts starting a thread like that.

Being a Chicago blues/classic rock player, I prefer the warm & character of alnicos. I haven't liked ceramics in my PU's as they are too bright for my tastes, even with 250K's (I like warm bridges). Of the ceramics I've tried, Gibson's 500T is by far my favorite; it's grainy quality flavors the tone and gives it more texture. You'd get the same thing from a 498T with a ceramic.

Ceramics can probably work in any kind of music, as can alnicos. All depends on the player & his rig.

Re: Are all ceramic magnets bad sounding?

Ceramics can sound cold (not thin or bright) when playing light with clean sounds.

But as you play harder and feed suitable rigs, they can produce the warmest distorted sound you have ever heard. If you ever heard Michael Schenker live (recordings don't do it) you'll know what I mean.
