Are all chorus pedals similar?

I use the term loosely, however im looking for a chorus pedal to use with my strat, and electric acoustic. I have an EHX small clone, which is ok, but not quite what im looking for.

I really like the chorus that Alice in chains used on their jar of flys/Sap album,

would a boss Chorus sound closer than the small clone?

Re: Are all chorus pedals similar?

No they are quite different, depending on from when, what model, who made it, and alot of other things:)
Boss made the two first that has spawned a whole market for chorus sounds.

Indeed. I have a voodoo lab analog chors, that one's great for lush, full, warm chorus tones. I've also got a boss CE-2 modded by robert keeley, that one gets a bit of a brighter, more hi-fi sounding chorus. I find the current boss lineup a bit cold to be honest though.

Re: Are all chorus pedals similar?

I too have the EHX Small Clone and it is enough for me, as i use the settings very low - you really need to concentrate to hear any chorus at all - so for me, the SC is enough !

Re: Are all chorus pedals similar?

I too only have the settings on the chorus set low, I dont think they are that usable up high, sounds like a bad 70s sci fi effect than what i hoped.

Thinking bout a boss chorus,

my boss ch-1 does everything i need..
it can go from subtle to extreme..

Re: Are all chorus pedals similar?

Of my chorus pedals, my favorite is the old Boss DC-3. It has excessive digital noise for my taste, but the chorus effect is really unique. With most chorus pedals, if you crank the rate and depth together, the sound gest so wiggly that it doesn't sound musical any more. But with this, it gets really wiggly, but it can still sound musical. And with stereo outputs it creates an amazing 3-D effect.

Re: Are all chorus pedals similar?

The Thundertomate Analog Chorus sounds pretty good from the clips I just listened to.

Re: Are all chorus pedals similar?

Cantrell didn't use chorus. He used a Dunlop Rotovibe and an Eventide Harmonizer.

Re: Are all chorus pedals similar?

During the 80's Boss made a flanger and chorus pedal that just worked on the higher frequencies which was cool. It added a nice shimmer without muddying up the midrange or bass.

Don't know about the chorus but the flange is an HF-2 Hi-band Flange

Re: Are all chorus pedals similar?

I use a DOD FX65 for acoustic.

The Danelectro CoolCat Chorus is great, but it's kind of a one-trick pony.

Re: Are all chorus pedals similar?

I have foundmine. Ibanez CS-9. Its amazing. it gives you so much control, Its stereo it has two out puts that are quite different so of every Depth/Rate settine you get two virsions, but the simiplicity is genious, two knobs/two outputs. It could be seventies space rock rediculous and it could barely noticeble. And it does amazing cleans. I will post a full review on it soon.

I don't mean to threadjack, but I've been wondering the same thing. I don't know the differences between lots of choruses. I've been looking for one that can do a decent Andy Summer and Alex Lifeson tone (Police and Rush). Any good ones (maybe ones that aren't so expensive?)

Early on, Lifeson used a Boss CE-1. The CE-2 and CE-3 should do a pretty good job. I used CE-2's for years, but they've gotten pricey on eBay. I have a CE-3 now.

Andy Summers didn't use chorus with the Police, he used a Flanger. I can't recall if it was an MXR or an EH Electric Mistress. I use a Boss BF-2 to get his sounds. With the delay control all the way down it gives than muddled-up, rolling sound that's more chorusy than the usual swooshing noises you expect from a flanger.

Re: Are all chorus pedals similar?

Sometimes a flanger can be tweaked to sound like a chorus. The Boss BF-3 does this really well.

Re: Are all chorus pedals similar?

I found a page dedicated to Alice in chains, and it said that Cantrell used a boss CE-5. Anyone here ever use one?
