Re: Are Antiquity humbucker coils aged? Or is it only the cover?

My Strat antiquities were grimy under the covers. I think they age everything.

Yea I think the aging process Seymour uses ages everything cosmetically and function wise.

I don't know how much of what I was told is urban legend, but back when I bought my first Strat Antiquities set, I was told all kinds of eccentric techniques were used to simulate common aging of guitar pickups, including conditions under which they would have been made at the factory in the '50's. For example, employees smoked cigarettes back in the day, so SD would wind the Antquities over an ash tray with a lit cigarette in it. To simulate sweat and outdoor humidity, dirt and oxidation, the pickups might be rolled in the dirt, dipped in water and left out for a few days.

I can't know for sure, but judging by the appearance of my Antiquities with the covers off, I can believe something similar to the above is true. Mine have some kind of black ash/grit on the coil winds and there's dirt and grime around the pole pieces and some of the copper is slightly discolored.

The attention to detail is really intense... each pickup is slightly different and that is just beautiful. The screws and tubing are aged... the cloth wire is aged... it's all aged.

They tie all the covers to the back bumper of Seymours car and he drags them around the block a few times. For the hardcore relic look, he waits until it rains to do it.
