Are most 3-prong amp cords interchangeable?

In my infinite wisdom, I have no idea what 3-prong cords go with what amps I have. Should I be concerened? One says 120v, another says 250v, but two others are blank as I recall. Thx

I don't believe it matters. You should just be able to use any IEC cable.

For the most part, yes. If a manufacturer ships an amp with an especially beefy cord (i.e., heavy gauge), it's probably best to use that cable, or another one of similar gauge.

Check the plug body. It should display a fuse rating.

Doesn't matter; use whatever you have to hand. Some hifi pieces do not have a ground pin and the matching IEC will only have 2 slots, and these will not work, obviously, as they will only fit on the piece of kit they are intended for, but everything else is fair game! I have a box FULL of IEC power cords: all different thicknesses and lengths, and even some OBSENELY expensive ones from ESP, Tiffany, Shunyata Research, et al.

If anything, hit up Amazon and pick up some 10 or 15 foot 14AWG or 16AWG cables. They're cheap enough and thicker than what you'd actually need. The extra length may come in handy at some point.

Yeah, the cords for computers, guitar amps, televisions . . . they're all pretty much the same.

That's what I was going to say.

I like the thicker cables for durability, even if they're complete overkill... In all my years as a PC tech you'd be shocked how many power cables I've seen that looked like they were kicked by a mule repeatedly...

I'm not sure if it's placebo or not,but I remember reading a review of an amp(Peavey Windsor,I think),& the reviewer stated it sounded better w/a thicker/better power cable.Since then I try to keep some fatter ones on hand just because,but never had any real issues to speak of...

Yeah, the cords for computers, guitar amps, televisions . . . they're all pretty much the same.

they all have the same IEC plugs on the ends
but much different gauge wires
anywhere form 18 awg to 12 awg

surely they all have a separate purpose
