Are the Custom, C5, and CC really the same pickups, but with different magnets?

I ask, because I noticed something weird on the duncan spec sheet.

Custom Five Four Con. Bridge: 14.4 k
Duncan Custom Four Con. Bridge: 14.1 k
Custom Custom Four Con. Bridge: 14.4 k

ok, so it looks like the C5 and the CC might have the same coils....

My question is, if they were really the same pickups with different magnets...why does the Custom have a lower dc resistance (which is not dependent on magnet type, as far as i know) than either C5 or Custom Custom?

Those numbers all fall with the +/-5% that SD allows on their pups which is, by and large, inaudible. The pups are wound to a certain number of turns, not a DC resistance, so you are going to have variance.

I mean if nothing else look at the names. : private:

Its always been my understanding that they are. However, I cannot state with 100% certainty that they are. I will say from experience, they are EXTREMELY close if they are different. Cuz I can acheive the result of each one by simply changing magnets.

The C5 is definitely the same as at least one of the other two. I remember when it first came out, the blurb on the packaging (or was it here on the site?) said it was the result of learning that a popular move by a lot of players was modding their Custom with an A5 magnet, so why not have an A5 version available directly from Duncan?

Re: Are the Custom, C5, and CC really the same pickups, but with different magnets?

I have heard claims that some Customs have grounded copper foil inside the coils. I have never seen a confirmation of this.

If you include the CC when you say "Customs", consider it confirmed. My CC has copper foil tape wrapped around each coil.

Inside or outside? Outside is normal, I don't think that's copper foil.

Outside, under the coil tape. Sure looks like copper to me but whatever it is, the effect is to soften the top end some. You can get the same effect by wrapping strips of aluminum foil around the coils and grounding it, I've done it.

Can't think of any reason to put any on the inside. Would increase the likelihood of a short as on the old Fender pu's where the wire was wrapped directly onto the rod mags. On the outside there's adhesive between the wire and the copper.

What I heard was inside. The outside is normal.

It would create Eddie Currents, thereby dampening the resonance peak. I have no idea whether the intensity of that effect would be in a useful range or whether there's any truth in this claim.
