Are these REALLY worth anything near this now or is this guy nuts?

Oh my god, what did these go for new? I've always wanted the head--in fact I just bought the blue tolex EL-34 (not the brass logo) 92 anniversary from forum brother sweetpete, but 5K for the combo??? How much is the half stack, ten grand

I don't know if it's just people getting their tax returns, but a 71 50 watt metal face just went for over three grand on ebay UK. I guess I'm out of the loop, lol, I didn't think anything non-plexi was going for that much.

Did 'ya read the description?

It's new old stock, personally signed by Jim Marshall.

That's kinda special. Not for me...but for someone...

Why not?

They can ask whatever they want.

If the market can bear it, then it goes for that.

If not, then it sits there.

Maybe it'll go up like that Trainwreck...but that's sort of going against the grain right?

Sure, they can ask what they want, but what I'm getting at is have any of these sold for anything near that lately? Nothing would surprise me the way the cost of vintage amps has been skyrocketing but is it worth it to the general masses the way say a 68 plexi will surely go for at least $3500 and up if it's not molested. There may be a crazy or two out there with cash falling out of their pockets who would pay that, but what I'm asking is, is it general acknowledgement that this limited production amp is selling on average for close to 5K. Does everyone look at this amp and say "oh yeah, that's a 5K amp", or is this really an item whose value still has to be set so to speak. I'll tell you one thing, I'd love to hear it. Never heard one.

Not only no, but h*ll no!!... I don't care if Jim Marshall personally peed on it, I would never pay that much for that amp...

But I'm sure someone will fall for the hype..

That's pretty expensive.

I am all for what the market may bear, but people look to Ebay for examples when they set pricing on their stuff. Auctions like that make me think the seller is trying to catch someone a bit tipsy and bind them to a contract with the "buy now" button.

Is it worth 5x a used 2203x, 7x a SLX, likely not. I can see getting 2-2.5k to the right person, "the right person". It's not the head version, which I believe it more worthy than the combo. Collector interest only. You would be well into a custom made amp at that price if you wanted a player.

I can trust a Marshall to do one or two things really well. I can even trust one to do one single thing just plain awesome enough to not want anything else!

...but to trust it to do ALL that its advertised?

No way....

I saw a guy pay $10k for a '64 Fender Super Reverb, about a month ago.
The amp was in great shape. Never used in a band setting and had one owner.
Amps are going up. Approaching the roof if not already through it.

Well, the bottom line is that they're just not making them anymore....

The price of vintage amps has been very accessible in comparison to the price of vintage guitars. Aside from something like a Dumble the high-end on a vintage amp is something that folks can get a foothold in and it's pretty much assured that the value will climb.

The Tweed Champ I picked up this past week went up $200 over the course of two years according to the Vintage Price Guide. That sort of thing is bound to happen.

But for some oddball Marshall that has all the markings of what makes Marshalls as effective as a doorstop after twenty minutes of playing, that just seems academic to me. A completist or collector, sure. But not for someone that's likely to own it and play it in real world situations.

I gotta wonder if it's just that people are getting their tax returns back and are spending foolishly. I just lost out on ebay on no less than three items that I thought I was bidding a bit high for, and got outbid--by hundreds of dollars! A few months ago what I bid would have been a bit too high for what they were selling for. I we'll see by summer whether my theory is right. Plus I think the best time to buy is winter anyway. The thrill of the spring thaw and forming new bands is gone and equipment gets sold off.

I'm not sure if everyone picked up on this or not, but I found it hilarious: "We purchased this amp new in 1992 and for some reason we decided to leave it in the box."

That's not a great selling line is it? It gives me the impression that "we tried out the amp, it sounded like @ss and now it's back where it belongs: in the box not being used".
