Are you talking sound-wise too? Or just construction? I know it varies for both. Some of the older NOS tubes are supposed to be the best.

Did you read the manual?

I think that you will probably only have to replace the power tubes (the 6l6s) to get that new tube sound unless you have microphonics in which case you may need new preamps.

I would wait for someone else to respond to this too, just to be sure.

how do i know if they are microphonic??

If your sound is important to you, get a set of matched and graded tubes. Otherwise get cheap chinese krud and pray that they sound half decent. But i'd say option one is best. New Old Stock (nos) is nice, but expensive-maximus, and there are sharks in those waters so beware. Avoid e bay. Watfordvalves.co.uk are a very good source of info/valves. There doesn't seem to be any point in having a top-notch amp and not having cash to put valves. like having a Rolls Royce, but not having tyre-cash

To answer your question: YES...there is a HUGE difference in tubes.

JJs are an inexpensive & safe bet....as are the Mesa branded tubes for your Rec.

I'd avoid Ebay unless they're from a dealer with some type of return policy & a bunch of good feedback.

ALSO go to this site & read up on the different tubes:

RE: microphonic tubes.

Turn the amp on and take it out of stand-by. Turn it up ..oh say 1/3 of the way. Get a chopstick/pen/pencil. Now LIGHTY tap each tube. If the tapping generates sound through the speaker, the tube is microphonic. If your amp has more than one channel, perform the above for all of them.

A bit of microphonic behavior is usually OK but it depends on the amp and what function the tube has in circuit.
