ARG! My 5150 blew!

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

6L6s are ran at what usually... 34 to 36ma, or would that be EL34s..? I can never remember...

You find the proper bias based on the plate voltage. Something that is skipped usually on this forum.

PM me Jacob if you want to do it correctly. Might be time to learn to do it right. ;)

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

Ok so, since the tube the repair guy put in doesn't work worth a crap and is running too hot, I pulled 2 and did the half power deal. This should keep me in business with just the 2 tubes I had that work fine. Sound like it'll work?

As long as it's either the two inner or two outter tubes, that should be fine. My advice, pull the pair that the mismatched one is part of. So if the mismatched tube is on the outside, pull both outside tubes.

I've never biased my amp myself but I'd like to know how. Please share.

And no, I don't have the power tranny fixed yet...lol.

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

So... are you going to rebias or not...? I know you're fond of how it was, but if it's eating tubes, it ain't doing nothing good for you.

It was done by the tech, to be checked by me when I get the new tubes.

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

All right.. Crossing fingers for a problem-free future then..

Why dont you just leave all the BIASing etc to the tech, and the playing to you? So far, no good has come from your BIASing experiment, and the next time it messes up, it may take even more stuff with it.

Just get it fixed, let a professional mess with the amp, play and be happy, dude.

Because that would be bad for me, lacking experience and knowing what I'm doing. Live and learn, make mistakes, know more, and keep trying. I'm in the real world of guitar playing, where if stuff goes wrong, ur on the road and there is NO tech. Frankly, it can suck, but it's part of the game. (phrase "real world" not to be taken too seriously)

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

Thats all well and good, but if your mistakes blow your amp up in the middle of nowhere you'll be wishing you had just left the thing alone.

Well it's certainly a better additude than "forget it and let someone else fix it".

Sure man, mess up your gear. Or you could keep your fingers to yourself, get it fixed properly, and then it probably wont mess up, or you can spend the money you spend on techs, to buy a back up? Randall RG150G3 heads are cheap and sound good.

And I too am in the real world of guitarplaying, and I would love to mess with my amps, and I do mess with my guitars alot, but high voltage and not knowing what I am doing? I leave that to the pros. A transformer can shock you VERY bad.

I am very sure it is. I know you are right Jacob, we all know you are right when it comes to this stuff. You are a amp-god, you and Walters are the masters of fixing and building amps. All of us with knowledge and experience cannot hold our own in a discussion with you, because your overwhelming amp and guitar skills are too advanced for us. Not all of us are in a band that is "touring", so what do we know?

Well, that attitude has given me years of trouble free operation from my gear. I send my amps for a service once a year, then they just work. Leave it to professionals that you trust, and there shouldn't really be the need to tinker with that kind of stuff. It just seems strange to me that you would risk doing a lot of damage to your amp, just for some experience.

ACtually you answered the question....trust. I wouldn't trust anyone around here unless I had too. They rip you off and are extremely rude as soon as you walk in the door. The only trustworthy guy has a 2 month waiting period and he costs mucho grande.

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

In other news, head is back up, rig is going, JJ tubes are ordered. Gracias fellow SD'ers. Now if only I actually used SD pickups.....

Re: ARG! My 5150 blew!

I don't think the amp would be having any trouble if you were using the proper pickups...
