Argh bad tone!

Hey guys,

I've got a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone (silly pedal I know) and a Peavey Rage 158.

When I play through the Gain channel on the Peavey - it has cut but it sounds like the weakest thing ever imaginable - but when I run the Metal Zone through the clean channel it just sounds like fuzz with no cut.

Does anyone have any settings so I can make the distortion sound decent with good cut? Because I'm not too good at fiddling with knobs.

I've got an MT-2 as well, and I think that moderation is the key with that pedal. It can get real grainy, real quick.

Rainmaker, I have that same Peavey Amp and I used to have a metal zone for about two weeks. I could not get a decent sound out of that amp with that pedal. You're absolutely right about the gain channel, it has no testicles at all. They must have castrated it in the production line somewhere. Yeah, the metal zone definately sucks with that amp. The only pedal I've found to sound good through that amp is John's modded DS-1. You might want to consider selling the metal zone and looking into getting john to mod you a DS-1 if you dont want to shell out the cash for a new amp yet.

First things first.... NEVER... EVER bash the Boss Metal Zone... :rocket:

Now, I have a Blazer 158, or whichever one has reverb. It was my first amp, little 15 watt POS lol. The Metal Zone sounded amazing through it until I got my Randall combo... then everything else sounded like crap. In my opinion, you need to set the EQ at half, then mess with the settings on the pedal till you find what you want. It might take awhile, but have patience.

The best tones I got out of my Metal Zone (I bought the pedal on impulse, when I was 17), is with the volume at 2 o'clock, gain at 9 o'clock, highs at 1 o'clock, lows at 3 o'clock, mid freq at 8 o'clock, and mid contour at 2 o'clock. It's going to sound fat and solid, at least, through my amp.

Remember, you're playing through a solid state practice amp and a pedal that has a less than great reputation. You're going to be kind of limited by your equipment until you upgrade to a better amp. Still, as far as practice amps go, the Peavey Rage/Blazer are two of the best.

Keely has a twilight mod for it but it's More then i would spend on modding the pedal. But the metal zone sounds good if you set it up right anyways...

Keely does offer a mod for the Metalzone. He says on his site that it gives the MT2 a bit of a SLO flavor. :saeek: I'll have to try this one. :burnout:

NEVER put distortion pedals over a dirty channel. That makes the muddiest, most sterile tone in the world.

In conjunction with a Graphic EQ and an OD, I was happy with my MT-2's tone. Just keep the mid frequency between 11:00 and 1:00, that's probably one of the most tone affecting knob on the pedal.
