Aria guitars any good?

Re: Aria guitars any good?

Big thumbs up to Frankie for his supremely informative post
I had a SH-800 back in the eighties but really had no clue what it was, only knew it outplayed the Gibson I had before it hands down!
Now I am informed and on the look out for a nice SH-800 as I sold mine back in the eighties for the princely sum of 100 pounds sterling!
Thank you sir!
Knew those Japan built early models would become collectible sooner or later!

Re: Aria guitars any good?

Neal Schon used them in the 80's.

Yes. He did. I actually was able to get this from a friend who bought it directly from Neal in the late 90's

The Ari Pro II Guitars - The Matsumoku Factory

The Urchin U100 was another attempt to compete with the BC Rich “Bich.” Although the guitars shape was radically different, the switch layout was the same. It was still somewhat a copy of a “Bich” and clearly aimed at the BC Rich market. The Urchin U100 was to be their “flagship” model, with the most elaborate electronic features, as well as becoming their highest priced guitar. It quickly gained the reputation of just another BC Rich knock-off and they did not sell well. They also flooded the market with low-end, bolt on neck, cheap priced Urchin models (U60, U70, and Deluxe). Many people have never heard of the U100 and very few people have seen or played one. Over the years the Urchin U100 has proven to be pretty good guitar. They are quite rare and highly collectable today’s market.
I owned and played a pair of Aria Urchins a Green burst wide ribbon quilt top U Deluxe bolt on and a sinister solid Black U 100 neck through for several years back in the late 70's-mid 1980's. One of the worst mistakes i ever made was selling those. Traded the U Deluxe in for a new Ibanez RG 550 when they first came out and regretted it very soon after. The U-100 I sold to buy a new 1988 Gibson Showcase U2 another decision I have regretted for many years . Worked for a BC Rich dealer back in the 1980's and would never call my U 100 inferior to any USA "Rich Bich" in any way. It was as was the Deluxe also a BEAST of a guitar and these were among the very best guitars I have ever owned!
Playing the U Deluxe on stage 1987.

That looks like a cool LP type with a Kahler. Im not fond of all the dials and stuff, but I know Schon likes swiss Army Knife guitars

Me either, but it's really two knobs vol / tone (closest to the bridge), LP style toggle, and the three switches behind the bridge (the two closest activate a network of resistors or something that simulates a single coil sound with the way I have it set, the one furthest away is a kill switch).

Everything else is related to the midi pickup and card built into the guitar (note the Roland type pickup between the bridge and the bridge pickup) the midi connector looks like an old style printer block connection.

Early 80s Aria guitars from back in the day were great. When Japanese guitars were the best in the world and from that era, still are.
