Aria Pro II refret ala fretless wonder

I have this client who usually fingerpicks on several high dollar Taylor flattops that I've worked over. He likes his frets to be reshaped in the old Gibson fretless wonder style and the action ON the frets. It's quite a bit lower than I set electrics for metal guys. Which is a colossal pain to do - I usually charge him just over twice my normal rate because crowning those .020 tall frets is a lot of work. I can't even play them when completed - it's too low for me, and the strings buzz from my attack. He has the lightest touch of players that I work for, and there is no buzz when he plays.

Anyway - he bought this 20 year old Aria Pro II 330 style axe - a true hollowbody semi-acoustic. And he requested the usual fretless wonder setup. I used mandolin wire instead of medium stuff, very narrow and .037 tall. I didn't realize how flexible this wire was - and sharp as hell. Because of the 6 ply fingerboard binding I had to do some serious notching on the fret ends, and then glued them in with brown hide glue. As I said, recrowning was a royal beeotch, and the fret ends required finessing. Took several days to get right, but I finally strung it up tonight. I thought it was impossible to do - but it's stoopid low with light strings (.009's). Again, I can't play it - but with a really light touch, no fret buzz. Pretty sure he'll love it when he picks it up tomorrow.

Nice job!
I too, like low action but bigger frets. That’s really, REALLY low!!

Re: Aria Pro II refret ala fretless wonder

Haha....crazy...had customers like that as well....and the funny part was that most of them was about 1.90 m tall and about 95kg....but needed stupid low action and weeny tiny strings.....

Re: Aria Pro II refret ala fretless wonder

I like it
If I were anywhere near you
I'd want you to do mine that way as well

That looks awesome

Re: Aria Pro II refret ala fretless wonder

I've got an old Hagstrom that has frets like that. Not the thing for my style.....but I don't want to refret as I'd have to do nut and look at a few other setup issues into the bargain.

Those figures translate 8 feet 3.2 inches and 456.4 pounds for the Americans in the audience. We also measure our string guages against the thickness of elk hair.

Wow, that is crazy low. I like low action, but with bigger frets...those are tiny!

95kg is 209lbs
And 1.90 meters is 6’2”

I also took into account the average American is taller an more rotund than the average European to better reflect the weight the average American would see as the same standard deviation away from the mean. I also accounted for inflation and global warming.

That is fantastic! stoopid low is the way i like them.
i had an MIJ Aria Pro 2 ZZ Custom in the mid eighties, great guitar,
The guy is going to like it a lot.
That set up is a Soloist Dream for sure.

Re: Aria Pro II refret ala fretless wonder

I love fretless wonder frets. It's hard to tell from the pix posted here exactly how much crown the guy went with on his Aria, but the originals had very little crown. They were extremely boxy...but the lowness negated most of the bad aspects of boxy frets.

I don't use a light touch at all, and I still love those frets. I think you just have to get used to really feeling the fretboard under your fingers. I'm not a huge bender, so it's not a problem to me.

Eh???

Frets are indeed small... but.... That's not super low action by "metal guy standards", unless you've got really tiny fingers and that binding is miniature

Well maybe not for 9's, unless they're a high-tension string

Enter the thread sh!tter

People you dislike stating the obvious doesn't detract from its obviousness

That action is almost as high as the binding thickness. That ain't gonna set no records, regardless of your opinion of my person

There you go...assuming again.
I don’t dislike you...the fact that you think I do would imply that you think that you actually occupy my thoughts, which you don’t.
I’m completely indifferent to you.

The fact that you feel the need to sh!t on everybody’s thread is your own personality defect to fix, not mine.

What’s wrong, Daddy didn’t throw the ball around with you as a child enough?

I guess even negative attention is SOME attention.
