It kinda flashes blue when I switch it off standby and makes funny noises but doesn't actually amplify any signal, this is one of the power tubes by the way. I didn't even think I'd used them that much.
Re: Arse! One of my valves looks completely bollocked
Sounds like the base/glass lost it's seal. It's finished.
If the other tubes are good, you could probably get away with replacing just that one with the same brand.
Re: Arse! One of my valves looks completely bollocked
Ah cool thanks for the explanation Mr. Joneser well maybe not a complete loss then, it does only have 2 power valves though so would it be safer to get a complete matched pair or does your previous advise still hold? Also this thread I started a while back is pretty much the same place I'm at with respect to biasing although I think I'm fine poking around in amps as I know all the safety stuff and I'm doing a physics degree so I understand why the caps are so dangerous.

Excellent quintessentially British thread title old chap! :22:
Yes, if this is for the JTM60 in your avatar, a matched pair of JJ EL-34s is probably your best bet. I bought some from this guy on Ebay recently and they sound excellent in my JMP 2204.
How long have you had your current power valves and how much use have they had? If they're new(ish) It might be a good idea to have your bias checked/set and the amp inspected for any underlying problem.
Heheh well I try my best
Wow I didn't realise how long it had been but my invoice from watford valves is dated 1 Sept 04! It's a JTM30 Simon so it has 6L6's as standard although I wouldn't mind trying EL34's if I need to stick in a pot to bias it with then it should be doable right? I just have to tune it for the 34's?
