ARTIE'S COIL SWAP MOD WITH SERIES/PARALLEL BLENDER POT

Despite my soldering hand not being quite as steady as it used to, I am planning wiring in a push pull to my Washburm WI66 to get Artie's coil swap mod. Will probably later also replace other vol pot with a second push pull to give combined OOP /series. This will give me my favourite Jimmy Page variation...series/ parallel options, coil swap and a combined OOP /series with the added benefit of blend possibilities.

The WI66 is a really great guitar as regards sound and playability made to a high spec in SK.. Sadly, for some reason , this model went out of production many years ago and no comparable replacement was marketed except ,for a period when .an expensive USA made version was available. Its quirk is that instead of tone controls for the 2 SD pups Washburn installed its VCC control which enables you to blend each pup between series and parallel. This control is, I believe ,a dual linear 500k pot wired as in the diagram below. FWIW I have no issues with playing a guitar using only the tone controls on the amp.

Although the wiring looks a bit complex ,I think the coil swap mod can be achieved by simply “interrupting” the green wires from the pick ups in the diagram from coil 2 to the VCC control with the coil swap push pull. See sketch below..Sorry about both being labelled Fiig 2 . Hopefully this will not cause confusion

Hopefully ,when the coil swap is engaged , it will be possible to blend the slug coil of one pick up with the screw coil of the other between series and parallel..

I can't see why this should not work but perhaps I am missing something. Accordingly would appreciate relevant comments from others.

I think there is sufficient difference between the Custom Custom and the 59 to make the coil swap interesting.

Am a bit surprised not to have received a single comments to my earlier post.. My 2 PP s arrived and I eventually got around to a bit of re wiring. Some minor issues with the circuit grounds for the combined OOPs/Series push pull but everything working fine so I now have my favourite Jimmy Page variation in my favourite guitar.

I am still experimenting with all the various combinations and the blend pots are interesting but I would not recommend installing them as a project . A push pull giving series/parallel is far more practical as you still have the pot function. . However, if they are already installed you might has well use them.

Hopefully somebody in the forum found these posts of interest.

Even if you don't see comments, these are the types of posts I love here. Especially if you let us know what you learned from this. This isn't a scheme I might use myself, but I bet it will help a lot of people.

Re: ARTIE'S COIL SWAP MOD WITH SERIES/PARALLEL BLENDER POT

Jimmy Page schemes are typically done in Les Paul type guitars, and since there aren't long shaft blend pots to be had, it's unlikely anyone has tried or could try this scheme unless they did it in an SG or other thin bodied guitar. Not all modders have been hearty enough or felt the need to try the JP mods even. So that would contribute to few comments.

Mincer. Thank you very much for that encouragement. I will continue posting anything which I think may be of interest.

I have to admit to being disappointed with the lack of reaction to some of my posts.

Over 4vyears age, after much doodling I came up with a way of getting combined Series/OOPs in one push pull DTDP. Its highly likely I was not the first to work this out but I was over the moon with my discovery. I really like OOP combined with series in both HBs and single coils and have fitted this mod for many people . I have also subsequently read on other forums over the past years other people saying what a great mod this is. Some have refered to it as The Albert King mod. Whether this is because it produces a tone like his or because he actually used the mod is not clear but I suspect the former.

Way back in March 2013 I posted details of my discovery on this forum but was disappointed to get only a few fairly negative responses.

Import LP's like Epi's don't require long shaft pots, so I've put alternative wirings with push-pulls, including the Jimmy Page system, in LP's, 335's, and SG's. Also installed Artie's Coil Swap Mod.

The very first push-pulls I ever installed were two in a Hamer Echotone 335 (the dreaded F holes! Oh no!). The second was the 4 push-pull Jimmy Page system in a an Epi LP. Prior to that I knew nothing about electronics and had never used a soldering iron before. Not that daunting of a task. Many players have done the JP system. Some guys get themselves worked up and break out in a cold sweating just thinking about rewiring and push-pulls. The fear is greater than actually doing it.

To be fair, 4 years ago in forum years is like a lifetime ago. We are getting more and more people who come here for cool wiring ideas and discussion about what can be done, so don't give up.
