Do you guys have any advice for getting more presence? It'd sound godly if it didn't sound like the mic was in the distance. I'm a noob with recording at home but great at live sound. They are nothing alike haha. Help!!

P.S. All the backing tracks for this song SUCK! even I coulda mixed the track better.

i dont think many people here know "as I am" from DT, thats why they havent read the post as they shoudl have. try posting the thread as "need help with mic placing", putting this clip as an example. While you wait for the replys, do yourself a search on mic placing as well...

by the way, great playing there, love that song.

I really dig that tone. As for mic placement, generally, on axis will give you more presence/treble bite, off axis will give you a darker sound, depends on what you're shooting for, it takes some playing around, but you'll find what you like. What setup are you using for that take?

Thanks, I'm no expert at recording. That's the H&K with the Arion running with an EMG 85. SM57 with no mixer, stright into comp.

Yeah Jacob, your guitar tone's on that track are kick ass. What are your settings on your H&K and the Tubulator? With just the Valveking and the Jackson, I keep the gain on 7, but if you use the Tubulator to goose it, I roll it back to 5, with the tubulator's level and tone dimed, and overdrive all the way down.

The amp has the EQ all the way up on all 3 bands, gain on 7 and tubulator with the volume all the way up, tone slighty right off center, and gain all the way down. I keep tellin all you guys that these amps KICK! Dude, see how it sounds recorded right?!?

Most of my tone IS the Arion! It just melds so well with the amp. We played a show this weekend with a guy runnin a master volume marshall and he said at the end, "Thats a nice tube head you got there" cept it's not tube.......now that.....is a GREAT amp.

That's no lie.

You're slowly winning me over with your tones from this rig. I may have to get off my hybrid amp-bashing pedestal if you keep it up.

EDIT: just listened to it again on my speakers at home - I see what you mean about needing more presence. The tone in your second clip is 100x better. Some of what you need can be done in post - use an EQ to roll off all the frequencies of the guitar from about 75hz down. That should clear up the bottom end. Also close-micing right in front of the cone with your sm57 on-axis (like what was mentioned above) should pick up some more high end for you.

You should get off the bashing, BUT keep it for marshall hybrids....they still suck.

Closer to the dust cap of the speaker.

How far from the grill do you have the 57? Try to keep it within an inch or so. Start in the dead center, and then move it slight off center (literally like a cm at a time) and decide where it sounds best.

Also, stick the mic in the center of each speaker and find the best sounding one - they all will sound different.
