about a month ago, I posted regarding my "Anniversary Strat Project"

I received the Callaham hardware a few days ago.

Today, I got the finished body back from from Roxy. I think they did a beautiful job. It's a vintage blonde finish. My neighbors saw it and said it looks like a pearl, so I might just name it Pearl.

I hope to start finishing the neck this weekend - it's going to be an amber tint gun oil. A week or so while I finish and get the pickguard assembled, and I'll be in good shape.

Anyway, here's some pics of the finish:
vintage blonde

enjoy

Peace

Hey Gary - you didn't warn me to cover the keyboard before I started drooling!!!

That guitar is going to be gorgeous.

Please keep us posted.

the body was from USA Custom ... from their "Anniversary special" sale - $99.

for those who are interested, the finish was $240 from Roxy. and yes, he does a nice Mary Kay. He has a couple pics of that finish in his gallery, which is linked on my page.

thanks for all the compliments - I'm going to edit the pics again, as I think they came out a little small to do justice to the finish.

Re: ash strat progress pics

Gonna be a nice one Curly. Do you have gold plated hardware to use on it?

That'll complete the Mary Kaye look.

I have a Fender Japan 40th anniversary Mary Kaye Strat that I bought from a friend in Japan unseen. Weighs a ton!

I need a new body for it...or else I need to sell it.

So with finish that body cost you about $350?

I'm gonna try my own hand @ the Mary Kay....I was thinking one of those chambered hard tail strats :32:

What are you putting on that beauty? My personal favorite is a Tortoise shell, but you can pretty much go with any color on that.

Re: ash strat progress pics

nice...looks like it's pretty much perfect...let's the grain show through just enough!!! :32:

haha, my first choice was tortoise, but for now, I got a pickguard from Callaham which is parchment white with a vintage 8 hole pattern.
I'll probably use aged white Fender pup covers and knobs.

my Warmoth strats have been kind of "vintage modern" specs I guess. This particular guitar kind of developed into a vintage concept. The neck has a vintage profile, and the cosmetics are fairly true to early 50s strats. Actually, I would have done a two tone 'burst, but it didn't seem to suit the wood, so we agreed on vintage blonde.

BTW, Erlewine's book on finishing has a formula for Fender blonde. It may be worth taking a look at. I think some of the ones that the guys on Reranch have done look pretty good too.

Re: ash strat progress pics

Look'in good Curly !! Is that Nitro or Poly ? I'm guessing poly compaired to
the price of Project X is costing.

I have that book. I don't know if you remember the sunburst Tele I have that I put the El Dorado hardware on....I used their sunburst formula with not as much red.

They have a Mary Kaye formula in there too....I'll try it out on some blanks first to see what I like.

Anyway, the parchment will look nice on that.....can't wait to see it!

Re: ash strat progress pics

:why: :dammit: Gary - you :censored: (now turning a shade of green) - don't put any more threads up showing the finished guitar without appropriate danger & health warning signals, otherwise I'll just have to come and get you!!:nana:

Re: ash strat progress pics

thanks for all the nice compliments!

I added some pics with the pickguard:
page 2

to answer a couple things ...
the body was 3 1/2 lbs, before getting the thin poly finish. I know about the argument for nitro, and I'm doing my own nitro on a couple bodies, but this finish is thin, and the body has a very resonant tap tone.

the hardware is chrome .. I just don't care for gold that much. The color is a little different than a Mary Kay. I think some of the early blondes had chrome hardware.

I'm probably getting a tweed case to complete the vintage theme. :)

I'm going to use a set of Antiquities from another strat and see how that sounds - I have a feeling they'll be perfect for the ash.

price was $99 for the body, $240 for finish, plus S & H (about $35)

Re: ash strat progress pics

Jeez another amazing strat for you Curly?!?! I envy you, and admire your taste.

Re: ash strat progress pics

Beautiful !!!

Can't wait to see the finished product. I have a feeling the Antiquities you mentioned are just gonna sing in that baby.

Peace,

Darrin
