asymmetrical humbuckers?

Snoogles

Cranky-dologist
i've recently heard about asymmetrical humbuckers. they are supposed to give a more convincing single coil tone when split.

anybody here have experience with these?

what if i already have a DMZ Super-2 and a PAF Pro? could i swap bobbins and make my own asymmetrical HBs?

Re: asymmetrical humbuckers?

There is a great big thread stickied about hybrids at the top of this forum that might answer this.

Splitting higher output humbuckers tends to work better than lower output. Using a hybrid or assymetric bucker and splitting to the hotter coil would be much the same.

I have been told that a super 2 is very similar to paf pro with a thick ceramic so combining these may not do much. Their stated DCR is very similar.

Re: asymmetrical humbuckers?

They are my favorite humbuckers, and they do split more appealingly IMO, as long as you hook up the most powerful of the two coils to be run by itself. I'd like to try making an 8K humbucker with a 5K/3K or 6K/2K split once I start experimenting with making pickups. For now, I like the Unbuckers from Lindy Fraling and the BBV's fro Gibson.

Re: asymmetrical humbuckers?

The magic happens in parallel mode; you get a "deeper", "3D" or "stereo" sort of sound. To my ears, this is maximized with two different wire gauge coils, say 42 & 43 AWG.

Re: asymmetrical humbuckers?

Many DiMarzios come that way. They call it "dual resonance". The idea is that they're supposed to cancel fewer frequencies & not be as peaky because the two coils don't have the same resonant peak layed on top of each other. The drawback can be that some don't cancel hum as well as a symmetrical humbucker. I've heard people say they don't like any pickup with that design--I dig 'em.

Re: asymmetrical humbuckers?

some hybrids are magic, some stink. My favorites are the custom/59B, custom/pearly, fullshred/jb, custom/jb, bluesbucker (dimarzio!) and patb2, just to name some of my favorites.

oh, and my fav for the neck: jazzB/59B!!!

man I bet the jb fullshred hybrid......... Well...... Shreds!

Re: asymmetrical humbuckers?

so, if you do something like a JB/Shred combo, then can you use both hybrids for the neck and bridge positions? because they will essentially be the same pickup, no?

Re: asymmetrical humbuckers?

We should probably sell the 59/Custom Hybrid. Oh well, off to NAMM...

What do you have in store?! you wouldn't.... nah, you wouldn't make the 59/custom hybrid a regular, right?! please do, though!

the fullshred/jb hybrid with an a5 screams and sings like crazy. the fullshred/jb hybrid with an a8 roars and sings like crazy. ferrari enzo vs Bugatti Veyron.

so you could use one kind of magnet for the bridge, and one for the neck?
