At long last...a KRANK clip

OK, I've decided that its time for me to start recording my amp...cause I'm sick of the anemic tone I'm getting out of the PODxt.

So...I did a little experimenting today. Its been years since I've miced up an amp...and I've never been able to make it sound decent before. But, I've got a long road of learning ahead of me...and here's the first step:

#1: first try. PRS singlecut w/ full shreds into KRANK through Ear Candy buzzbomb. Eminence governor miced. e609 silver
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=424368&songID=5240398

#2: little more pratice. PRS singlecut w/ full shreds into KRANK through mesa/boogie trad 4X12. Eminence governor and man-o-war miced. i5
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=424368&songID=5244499

#3: Gettin closer...but still a long way to go. PRS singlecut yadayadayada KRANK mesa. Governor miced. SM57
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=424368&songID=5247668

Its very rough, and my playing is a little sloppy...but hell. It works. Needs more mixing. But I've been working on this for the better part of 6 hours. I'm tired of the track.

Awesome!Really nice tone ,and a great feeling in your playing! The backing was descent (the drumms can be better ,but hey we all hve that problem)But the tone is great!A tad dark for my liking ,but that can be change with the treble knob easily!
I love it man!I want to hear it as a whole song!

Re: At long last...a KRANK clip

This was mostly just a preliminary thing really...it took me a really long time to get it to where it's at now...probably about 10 different takes. I ended up using my e609 silver on this one...though hopefully if I get a little extra time between school and work tomorrow I'll be able to test out the 57 and i5 a bit more. Right now I'm runnin it through my earcandy...maybe I'll try the mesa tomorrow too. It definitely needs some improvement, but hopefully with experience I'll be able to get it to a good place.

This was my PRS singlecut loaded with full shreds.

Re: At long last...a KRANK clip

Krank, do you feel the PRS Single Cut has more low end than your McCarty? Does your SC have a trem?

Re: At long last...a KRANK clip

good stuff. i like heavy riffs

Re: At long last...a KRANK clip

I've done a little more experimenting...gotten the tone a bit more refined. This one's still got some kinks to be worked out...the drums need work for sure. There's a little too much "boom" to the low end...but...overall its coming together a bit better:

That one was once again my PRS singlecut loaded with full shreds. This time I routed it through my mesa 4X12 and used an Audix i5. I miced both the top governor and man-o-war in my cab. The man-o-war plays the interval and drops out for that little palm muted thing.

Re: At long last...a KRANK clip

Which model KRANK do you have?

Tis a Revolution 1.

@ bluesguy: My Singlecut doesn't have a trem...and I'd say that it definitely has a bit more low end than my McCarty. I'm thinkin bout tryin the next few clips with my McCarty for comparison.

Re: At long last...a KRANK clip

Man, I really liked that first riff and I definitely was digging the tone! Keep up the good work!

Great riffing man!Very great! That's definetly my kind of music! The recording sounds too muffled!where is the problem?

Re: At long last...a KRANK clip

I don't even like metal - at all - and I was diggin that first clip. I'm sure I'd love the other ones too, but I'm pressed for time. Anyways, that was some spiffy playing! Good tone too.

I dunno man...I'd just call it lack of experience ;). I've got a few theories though...today if I have time I'm gonna try out the 57 a bit more. Its proving to be harder than hell to mic up those governors. The man-o-wars...eh...little too "g12t75" for my tastes as far as micing em up goes.

I've been talking with Jeff a bit, and he mentioned something about the i5 sounding kinda hollow. I'm inclined to agree...I'm not too sure how much I'm liking it. It sounds great at first, but the more I listen to the second clip...blah.

So...I'll see how things go today with the 57. Maybe I'll get some clean clips done with the e609 silver too. That thing's been sounding pretty unreal clean.

I appreciate the kind words, I appreciate the honesty as well ;). I'm open to any criticism and advice...Like I said...I'm a n00b as far as recording goes. But I definitely aim to get better.

Re: At long last...a KRANK clip

Just uploaded a new clip...this time I just miced the governor on my mesa. Jeff sent me some of Andy Sneap's settings for his Krank, but to be honest I found them to be a bit too scoopy. Bumped up the mids a little and this is what I came up with.

To my ears...I've solved some of the muddiness problems...though not all. The high end does seem a tad scratchy...I'm gonna have to turn down the presence control a bit next time. Its still a little too loose in the low-end as well.

I need to get me some better headphones for tracking. Right now I've got a choice between Sony MDR-V700's which suck and don't isolate at all, and my dad's bose quiet comfort 2's which isolate real well but have an intolerably flabby bass response.

You get def closer and better! The bad news is ,your backing track sounds muffled too. There have to be a problem with the software ,or mastering! Not enough presence there!
