So, A Buddy Of Mine Wants Me To Play On A Song Of His

Re: So, A Buddy Of Mine Wants Me To Play On A Song Of His

Your guitar parts sound great and fit the song like a glove. Put a little more juevos in the vocals to make it really kick booty.

I don't mean to be critical of the vocalist, but the guitars are screaming with passion. By comparison, the vocal sounds a bit dry and "matter of fact" in the mix.

I really dig the song! Before JJ added his input, it was totally killer stooges/damned type punk stuff. Jollys shredding amped it up to 80s metal. In keeping what Lazarus was saying, I think the singing was appropriate for the first version, but would be better amped up alittle for the metal version.. But Id def buy it! John, your playing was killer and you have quickly become a floyd Jedi!!

Whilst not disputing JOLLY's guitar playing abilities, I must ask you to consider whether his contribution was appropriate to the recording. Look no further than your own comments.

Good observation. From a production perspective, pre-JOLLY overdubs, the song had a cohesive arrangement that suited the composer's general musical style.

Jolly's shredding amped it up to 80s metal. In keeping what Lazarus was saying, I think the singing ... would be better amped up a little for the metal version.

Another valid observation. From a production perspective, JOLLY's contribution has changed the song and arrangement. (The question of whether this is better or worse is entirely subjective. What matters is whether this change is what the composer required?)

Thanks everyone. As far as the vocals, Vern is going to do them over. He's not a singer anyways, and he'd probably be the first to tell you that if I didn't. As far as my contribution to the song, I just received a phone call from him saying that he'd listened to the song about a hundred times, and that he loved what I did, it took the song to whole different level, and it was exactly what it needed. I was very happy to hear that, and it made my day!!:)

All's well that ends well.

As you probably already know, during the recording sessions for "Wish You Were Here", Pink Floyd had Stephane Grappelli lay down some jazz fiddle on the title track. Famously, the band elected not to use it. If/when you ever get to hear the Immersion Edition bonus tracks, you will soon appreciate why.

Commenting as i listen...
The intro riff reminds me a lot of WASPS's Animal, which is great.
Hahaha great whammy abuse man! I need to get a whammyed guitar!
Tasty solo and the last licks were awesome man.

Re: So, A Buddy Of Mine Wants Me To Play On A Song Of His

haha...awesome thanks. It went from something kind of ok/a bit mundane to a really cool catchy 80's metal track when you added your guitars man. Very cool! The whammy embellishments are just what this song needed & that was a sweet rockin' solo! (I'd have had it a bit higher in the mix...but that's just me haha). The vocals could be stronger as mentioned before, but otherwise this thing could have been all over the radio back in the day :bigthumb:
