You didn't happen to find a visual spectrum of the various types showing the vatious magnetic fileds did you?

i couldn't help but notice that it would appear likely that the amounts of aluminium and copper in the various grades seems to be responsible for a proportionately large amount of the inductance and general magnetism of the device; whereas the nickel and cobalt contents may serve as an indication of relative mid-range prescence and high-low clarity by grade

it begs the questions:
is cobalt responsible for the 'dark' and 'hard' descriptions of A4 and A8?

is there a direct link between copper content and chime/good harmonics?

how many of us have tried A3 magnets with hot winds?

has anyone tried A1? 2 A1s in a soapbar would have to be worth investigating?

has anyone tried an A5 magnet in place of the larger ceramic magnet in an invader or 500T?

A3 sounds very vintage: thinner mids than A2, little more highs and presence, all in all: woody and reedy sound. Makes the C3 going in the direction of a Ant Bridge - nice

had an a3 JB at one point that i traded to mark C. for a seth.it wasn't as fat and in your face as the stock a5 was, much clearer and mellow. btw it appears that alnico 3 is just... alni 3?!:eyecrazy:

Can anyone clear something up, please?

The book "The Blackguard" by Nacho Banos refers to AlNi 3 magnet material being used by Leo Fender in the earliest production phase of his Broadcaster and two-pickup Esquire instruments BUT that the AlNi 3 was only used in the treble/lead pickups.

The name, AlNi (without any Co) refers to the absence of Cobalt in the magnet material. Is this the same blend as the AlNiCu referred to by Super Rad Stuff or something different?

Nor A4 or A8 can be described as neither... A4 is the most neutral sounding of all magnets; it's my favorite in the neck position when paired with a PAFish, low 7K wind and 1022 polepiece screws, and it's the best tonal match to any bridge position A8 magnet, which has a Pavarotti-like vocal quality, not present in any other magnet I've tried. It has just the right amount of power vs clarity, being the highs smooth and creamy but with enough bite to be incisive and cut through the mix without piercing your ears.

I have, putting an A8 in a 500T. The result was a more balanced sound and speciallly soothing when played clean. In the high gain dept, it sounded like a T-Rex that obeyed your every command like a highly trained german shepard.

i'm very interested in A4 now, having tried a neck Z90 and had another look at the chart... was wondering about 2 x A4 mags in a P90-type pickup?
i imagine the clean tone in the neck PAF-type A4 pickups you mentioned would be very nice...
am interested to try a neck A4 with an A8 or ceramic bridge pickup too.

I had a pair of very old DiMarzio PAF in my '79 Hamer Special. Both were 8.1k and had an unoriented A5 stock. I put an A4 in the neck to make the low E string less boomy and put the A8 in the Bridge to make it beefier. Worked great!

I put an A5 in a Duncan Distortion neck. The ceramic was too vowel-sounding for my liking. And it was hard to keep it under control. Then I went to A2, which was thoroughly middy. All mids. No bite to it whatsoever. Then I tried A5, and now it sounds pretty good. The only reason I haven't gotten a 59 is because I don't have a good excuse to spend 50+ dollars on something that I have basically solved with 10.

And I like the JB8 in the bridge much better than I liked the distortion. It's way more polite and respectful of the amplifier. It's like someone figured out how to communicate with the Hulk instead of just letting him run through town out of control.

Before making my Frankenbucker, I tried the stock Ibanez Powersound (neck position) with an alnico (don't know which one, no Ibanez specs on magnets used) from the Inf 2. Same size magnet. The impression that I got was that it seemed to have less of everything than before. It was a bit cleaner sounding (particularly on the low strings) but less dynamic, which was a drawback, so I didn't keep it. Perhaps because I've been playing ceramic pickups for so long, I've just become used to the way they sound :33:...

The Frankenbucker's mismatched coils + ceramic magnet works much better - keeps the power but adds overtones, more sensitive to where note is picked, and less vowel-like quality. Hmm, should've tried the alnico with the mismatched coils just to hear...

I've heard that Dennis (AddictionFx) can get A9 mags for ya.
