Attn PRS Owners: What's in your PRS...

Hey guys,

I just got a killer PRS Custom 22 and I want to swap out the pickups to some Duncans. My main guitar is really a Les Paul and I have the C5/59 combo in it. I was thinking of doing the same combo in it but then maybe I should have a different setup in it. I have also tried the JB/59 and JB/Jazz in some ESPs that I owned. I am thinking that those combos will also work with PRS guitars (mahogany/maple top/Rosewood neck). Well, I am just tring to make a desicion on what pup combo to put it. I know that ultimatly that its my choice, but I want to hear what you guys have done to your PRS and what you do or don't like about what was done. I have learned a lot about tone from you guys on this forum and I want to say Thanks!

To make things easier these are the pups I have been looking into: (don't be surprise to see some regular all-stars)

Bridge:
C5 - I like it in my Les Paul, at the time it was something other than the JB
JB - Well... lets just call it "old faithfull"
* I have been shootin out these two pickups and I am really stuck hard on both

Neck:
59 - Got it in my Les Paul b/c it was recommended with a C5...it is a little bass heavy though... maybe its just the Les Paul....
Jazz - I will admit that I stayed away b/c of the name, but willing to give it a shot b/c I'm reading to many good things...
AIIP - I was reading the description of it on the Duncan site and I like what it is suppose to do... Slash knows something about tone...

By the way I plan on having these pups wired to split. Also I am planning what to put in on 2 Les Pauls and 2 PRS with Duncans. I like to do all different setups.

Ok ...lets begin! :burnout:

Thanks,
Sniper-V

I have the dragon II bass in the neck and an sh-5 in the bridge. I didn't like the dragon II bridge cause it was too vintage sounding, but the neck dragon is great. I'm having the same problem many others are having with the sh-5... no low E definition. Other than that I like the pickup on the other strings.

I had the C5/59 combo in mine and loved it. I guess the question though is what are you looking for. I like that vintage tone myself and wanted a 59 with high output in the bridge. this combo worked great. In my heritage LP I have a C5 bridge and an AIIpro neck. I actually like the neck much better than the 59. It's really smooth and rich and sounds great both clean and distorted. I might switch out the C5 for a CC in the bridge. The C5 has huge balls, but might be just a tad too much bass for me. In the PRS though, I really liked the C5 better.

good luck

Sniper V,

Have you tried the Jay Turser special editions? These are incredible pickups available only in South Texas! These pickups are designed against the specs of some of the best pickups on the market. What those pickups have, these don't. Try them, I'm sure you will notice a tonal difference!

later, V-tone king.

Why are you answering your own question?

The Architect,

That post was made by a fellow co-worker of mine and used my ID to reply. It was intended as a joke, as we work for a local music retail super store, where Jay Turser and Behringer V-tone are some of the entry level (cheap/beginner) products that we carry and sell very very very heavily during this time of year...

I apologize for his physical/mental disability to register his own account to post replies. :smack: :chairshot :rocket: :kabong:

Thank you for your input on the actual topic of the thread...

Please keep the replies comming...

Re: Attn PRS Owners: What's in your PRS...

I'm no longer a PRS owner, but back when I got mine in early 1988, the pickups were just not very good. I got rid of the guitar because of it (dumb, wish I still had it..24 fret, 10 top w/ birds, whale blue :sigh:).

The stock pickups were kinda shrill, and treble-y (Scream? yes, Hot? kinda, Fat? no). Just sterile sounding. I shoulda just had Duncans put in, but I was young and stupid, and didn't trust the local tech anyways with the PRS rotary switching. The later/newer pups they use are so much better.

But I do believe a Reed (assuming a set neck version) would sound really good with a Custom or PAF-style (59, etc) in the bridge to enhance the low end a bit, and a Jazz in the neck to keep some clarity and warmth. That's what I'd put in if I got another (someday! :D)

In my 1990 Custom 24, I have a TB-11 Custom Custom Trembucker in the bridge and an SH-PG1n Pearly Gates in the neck. Alnico 2 all the way around.

God, your the first guy to agree with me on this. I feel exactly the same way with my Custom 24. I'm leaning towards the JB/59 combo too. It sounds killer in my Wolfgang. I have no idea whats in my '89 CE-24 but they sound so good I'll never change them. Wish I could get some specs on them.

Re: Attn PRS Owners: What's in your PRS...

I just went through this myself (it's what led me to the forum)... stock PRS pups are just way too honky and mid-rangy for my ears. After much deliberation, I ordered the C5b-59n. I've been partial to the C5 for awhile, but was really contemplating moving to a JB instead because I was using .12 strings for a while, and they sounded better with the JB and could get whoofy with the C5 (and, to be fair, 98% of the production pickups out there). Anyway, a tech friend of mine let me come over to his shop and swap a bunch of pickups in and out, and he had some PRS's with various combos around. After a night of driving him nuts, the C5-59 and C5-Pearly Gates sounded the best to me... the 59 was a few buck cheaper and I liked it marginally better on setting no. 3 on the PRS, which I use heavily. The 59 will not be as bassy on a PRS as a Les Paul.

The JB was great, but just a touch too bright for me in the PRS with 11s. Choosing the bridge pickup was a much bigger decision... the sonic differences were much more clear cut there. Trying to judge the best split-coil sounds with the neck pickups... after awhile, you just have to choose something.

Oh, you probably know this, but, should you go with the 59, you have to order it with the 4 conductor and SHORT LEGS.
