Audacity Problem

Hi, sorry if this has been covered before - I looked but did not find it searching on here.

Anyway, I downloaded Audacity and went to record a track just to test it out. Listen back, sounds fine. Then I go to record another track in harmony just for kicks, and from what I can tell, the second track is playing back about 3/4 steps lower than the first track. So I test that - play an open d string, then record the same thing again. Same problem.

Any ideas?

Re: Audacity Problem

yeh i have this problem. i think its to do with latency, the input, be it jack, midi, usb or whatvever from your instrument or micrphone will transmit a signal through your computer to the audacity programme. It takes a little while because it has to go through your motherboard and then the software. You have to work out the value of this latency, in other words time the delay. You then just compensate each new tack be this value. The major problem i found was that the value of the latency differed depending on the speed at which my computer was running which depended on all sorts of factors, some of which were affected by the recording itself. I reckon we just give up and buys macs

Re: Audacity Problem

That doesn't sound like the way any program would be working normally. I would look into this problem more, and maybe post to the Audacity mailing list about it.

Re: Audacity Problem

Latency is time delay. This is a sample rate problem of some kind. Most likely the software & interface are set to different rates... one at 48kHz and the other at 44.1.

I'm not familiar with that software so I can't help you... but usually there's a 'project setup' menu for the song file & another menu for hardware preferences inside the program... And another menu dedicated to the hardware interface drivers that's outside of the DAW application. Like a MOTU or Presonus menu.

Make sure they're all set to the same rate.

Re: Audacity Problem

Never had that problem, and I'm running Vista, a 2.33 GHz CPU, 3 gig of RAM.
I'm using direct line in recording btw with Audacity.
Are you using line in or a USB device or something?
