Avatar cabs....yummy or bummy?

Re: Avatar cabs....yummy or bummy?

I've only heard great things about them. Basically solid cabs with your choice of any kickass speaker for a good price.

Re: Avatar cabs....yummy or bummy?

I've purchased speakers from Avatar - good people to work with. I don't have any experience with their cabs, but everything I've read here says they are very worth it.

Here is their website.

The bid on there now is rediculously low - but with 6 hours left, anything could happen I guess. If you want it - go for it.

FWIW, he's got perfect feedback with 3000 + transactions.

Re: Avatar cabs....yummy or bummy?

I've had a 2X12 and a 4X12 and they were both outstanding. The only 2X12 I've ever played through that I like better is my Earcandy Buzzbomb which actually is on par or better than most 4X12s.

I got a cream color 4X12 from Avatar with the Line 6 speakers in it, then got a H&K Triamp cab and put those speakers in it. Know what? The Avatar 4X12 actually sounded better than the H&K! The H&K still sounds freaking great, but the Avatar was just slighty better as far as being a bit more "organic" and open sounding. Granted, the H&K imo is one badazz looking cab, but the Avatar just sounded better. I'm so sorry I got it in cream though. I had a hard on for those old Mesa Cream cabs with the black baffle and metal grill, and was going to redo some amp I had in cream to match the cab. That never happened, lol. Sold both the amp then later the cab. That cabinet also sounded fantastic with a V30/G12H30 mix.

Re: Avatar cabs....yummy or bummy?

I'm the proud owner of a 2x12 Avatar cab with Celestion V30's. :) I heard about them on here and checked out their website. Called them up, told them what I was looking for, what amp I had, and they were a big help. I've had mine for alittle over 2 years now.

Re: Avatar cabs....yummy or bummy?

I have a couple of 2x12s, one open backed and one closed. They're good (but not great IMO) cabs. They're well made and use good materials but they don't sound quite as big as some more expensive cabs. Whether those other cabs are worth paying more is an individual decision.

FWIW, Avatar's vintage 4x12s are made by a very reputable builder and are sold at an exceptional price. That's the one Avatar cab that I'd say is unquestionably a terrific value.

Re: Avatar cabs....yummy or bummy?

thanks to all. i always like stuff that to me is "organic" sounding, so that's a plus. i'm not looking for really high end. i'm all about the mid-priced gear. if i don't get an avatar i'll probably get one of the carvins (either the vintage or "solid state" one).

not that anyone probably cares, but for what it's worth, my quest for the ultimate cheap combo led me back to where I started with my small tube PA heads (and also the crate power block) and pedals. i just need to drop down from a 4-12 to a 2-12, and stand it on its side to save some space. I know a lot of people were probably losing sleep over this dilemma. :laugh2:

i'm a head-n-cab guy at heart. :smack: (just not big heads-n-big cabs)

They are exceptional bang for the buck, I have an open back with a GB12 and a Texas Heat and a closed back with a GB12 and a Wizard.

I run a PB for practice and jamming when I don't have my tube head, it sounds very good. It's not a Bogner or similar booteeky cab, but for the price they are really hard to beat.

To be fair, I did use the 2X12 as part of a 3/4 stack with a Crate BV 4X12 bottom, the Avatar top and the head. Never used it by itself. It did however change the entire sound of the setup. Using only the 4X12 with Eminence Legend speakers it sounded...okay, but once the Avatar was added to the setup, the sound really changed to outstanding. The 4X12 however was used by itself and sounded killer.

I have a 2x12 with V30's. I have had it a couple of years now and it has been a great cab. Big 2x12 cab.

Here it is in the center, with a Carvin Head above, and an El Diablo 60C bleow for a size reference.

Re: Avatar cabs....yummy or bummy?

I have an Avatar 4x12. I really like it. I ordered it and had it at my house in 3 days - of course they are only the next state over from me.

It is 12" deep, compared to a Marshall which is like 14". So, it's a tad smaller. I cannot make a comparison between the two as I don't have a Marshall. But, at roughly 2/3rds the cost, get whatever look you want, whatever speaker combo you want, and deal directly with the owner - I'll take it.

Re: Avatar cabs....yummy or bummy?

I've heard great things about them and plan to buy one of their vintage 2x12 at some point, lotta bang for the buck!

Re: Avatar cabs....yummy or bummy?

I have an Avatar 2x12 with Eminence Red Coats. This cab sounds geat with any of my amps. I guess the sound depends greatly on the sepakers you choose, so the customization is one of the coolest things about getting an Avatar. Other than that, the prices and customer service are unbeatable.

Tipping a cab on its end works, but there are other options, like a used Mesa Recto vertical 2x12. It is a deep/voluminous cab that is well built, and great for heavy music. The Mesa vertical Recto cab is roughly 24" wide and quite deep. Avatar used to build vertical style cabs (within the last two or three years) from what I gather on my own recent cab quest. I hear Dave is a great guy, so give him a call, and ask him whether he sells a vertical 2x12 anymore. From what I recall, they are only 18"-20" wide or so...no prob for a powerblock to perch upon. Ebay is a source for these cabs used.

Re: Avatar cabs....yummy or bummy?

I got a 1x12 on ebay, direct from avatar, black tolex, black grill, closed back, ordered a hellatone 60 to put in it, no complaints, feels solid, looks good, sounds great.

cool. i never knew companies made "vertical" 2-12s. that would be ideal.
